It was a privilege to catch up with long-time club members John Roughley, 94, and his wife Jeanette during Ashley Wood’s visit to Gympie this week.

John shared some wonderful memories from the early days at the Lake, dating back to the late 1940s when he first started visiting with good friends Ken Otto, Viv Stewart and their families. He recalled that Ken Otto was the driving force behind the construction of the original clubhouse in the early 1960s, carting trailer loads of bricks from Gympie to Boreen Point, with John and fellow club members laying them by hand on weekends.

John also remembered discovering the original sailing boats stored in a shed owned by the National Fitness Club — boats that would become some of the first raced on the Lake in those formative years.

Jeanette reflected on her involvement with the original Ladies Committee, formed in 1961 to raise funds, organise social events and support the growing Club. By 1964, the committee had raised $300 to purchase a 16-foot pickup boat and became a major source of support and fundraising for the Club during its early years.

It was wonderful to see both John and Jeanette doing well and sharing such special memories of their time at the Lake.

Our Club owes so much to dedicated early volunteers like John and Jeanette, whose hard work, community spirit and commitment helped build the strong foundation that continues to support Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club today.

NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK 2026
“Your Year to Volunteer”

National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the people who generously give their time to support others and help build stronger communities across Australia.

Every community organisation, sporting club, charity, event, and emergency service relies on volunteers who quietly step forward to help make a difference.

At Lake Cootharaba Sailing Club, we are incredibly grateful for the volunteers who contribute their time, energy, and skills to our Club throughout the year and for the past 80 years.

Whether it is maintaining boats and club facilities, supporting race days and regattas, operating start and rescue boats, laying courses, running the clubhouse and bar, managing our website and promoting sailing, teaching Learn to Sail programs, mentoring race officials, managing boat storage, serving on committees, or helping guide the future of the Club — every contribution matters.

The success of our Club is built on the commitment of volunteers.

Your efforts create opportunities for others to learn, race, socialise, and enjoy sailing on beautiful Lake Cootharaba.

To all LCSC volunteers, thank you for the dedication, generosity, and community spirit you bring to our Club. Your contribution does not go unnoticed and is deeply appreciated.

And to anyone thinking about volunteering, there is always a place for people willing to lend a hand. Strong communities are built by ordinary people choosing to get involved.

Superstar Ancient Mariner, LCSC member and all round lovely lady, Adrienne McVerry, has skippered her way to victory at the recent Bay to Bay Yacht Race, with her son Simon as crew! She not only won first place on corrected time, first place Division 4 trailer sailers and first place in her class. We are very proud of you Adrienne! Well done!!

Adrienne’s view on the race:

“I was pretty glad we changed from the Genoa to the jib sat morning. And had a reef in the main too. We were surfing at times with south easterlies behind us. I think! Hardly had time to eat ! We were just glad to have made it safely. And we fluked a good start on Sunday morning !! 7 am ! Cheers. “
