Noosa Pirates Rugby League Club

Noosa Pirates Rugby League Club Noosa Pirates RLFC. The committee at the time consisted of just these three, Col (President), Robyn (Secretary), and Gary (Treasurer). A Cooroy effort.

Junior & Senior rugby League teams from U6 to opens boys, girls, men & womens team’s
We have two great facilities here on the sunshine coast, one in Tewantin & one in Cooroy. Col Christensen, along with Robyn Hart and his (Col's) brother Gary Christensen, formed what was then known as the Noosa & District Junior Rugby League Club in 1983. Rugby League in the Noosa area actually started

in Tewantin at Read Park. The club was known as the ‘Tewantin Pelicans’. Col took his son Greg down to sign on as a Pelican at around age 10. When he turned up, he couldn’t find a Registrar and there wasn’t much organisation. Col says the Pelicans eventually fell away, which is when he decided to resurrect the club in the Cooroy area, and the named changed to the 'Pirates'. The club started in Cooroy with 4 sides in the first year, consisting of the Under 9’s through to the Under 12’s. By the second year, a few more sides were added. Back then, games were played on the Cooroy Showgrounds opposite our current home ground. The home paddock for the Pirates today is known as ‘Christensen Oval’, which was developed in 1985. Col, along with the local publican Reg Cannon, brought the Pirates Clubhouse to life through a whole town effort. The only trades which required payment throughout the whole construction process were the bricklayers and roofers. All other help came from community members who volunteered their time. It was not only community members who helped, but local businesses and Council pitched in. PGH Brickworks supplied every single brick free of charge, and Council loaned the team a grader for a weekend to level the ground out. All of the Christensen brothers were involved with the Clubhouse being built, with Col’s brother Ray prepping the ground with his dozer for building to start. Funds were raised through Goose Clubs and Raffles at the Cooroy Hotel, and Local Member at the time, Bruce Simpson, was instrumental in helping to finance the development of the Clubhouse. While building was underway, the Bonnell Bros supplied the machinery which developed the main field. The Clubhouse and field were completed in just 4 months, and the Noosa & District Junior Rugby League Club was then fielding teams from the Under 9’s through to the Under 16’s. Along with parents of all Pirates players, Cols wife Del, made sure that the canteen was functional for many years while they were both involved. Col and Del were named the first Life Members for the Pirates in 1990. In September 2019 both the Junior and Senior clubs merged to become one united entity known as the Noosa District Rugby League Football Club. The Noosa Pirates boasts junior teams from Under 6's to U/17's, and senior teams from U/18 to Open Age Divisions - boys, girls, men and women! The club has two great facilities located at Christensen Oval, 57 Mary River Rd Cooroy along with club headquarters at the Noosa District Sports Complex, 31 Butler Street, Tewantin.

Words from our 2026 Club President Angus Stewart

Well, that’s a wrap on the 2026 season 💙💛

It’s been an amazing year both on and off the field, with record participation numbers across our junior, senior and female programs — a great reflection of where our club is heading.

Off the field, we continued ticking off some major goals from our three-year strategic plan, with one of the biggest being the completion and fit-out of our new gym and maintenance shed. This is a fantastic asset that will benefit our players and club for many years to come.

On the field, we had five Junior International teams and three senior teams qualify for finals.

Our Under 14 Boys and Under 15 Girls capped off outstanding seasons by bringing home premierships in the juniors. 🏆🏆

In the seniors, our A Grade and Reserve Grade sides bowed out in weeks one and two of the finals, while our Under 19s peaked at exactly the right time and fought their way through to the Grand Final. Unfortunately, they fell agonisingly short today, going down by just four points to an undefeated Caloundra side. They should be extremely proud of what they achieved.

There were plenty of memorable moments throughout the finals series, but two really stood out for me.

The first was Ryan Christensen’s sideline conversion after the siren in our home semi-final to send Reserve Grade through — a moment I don’t think anyone there will forget anytime soon.

The second was the incredible support shown to our Under 19s today. It was genuinely humbling to look around and see so many junior and senior players, parents, families, supporters and committee members there in blue and gold supporting the boys.

That is what our club is all about.

There are still a couple of presentation nights to get through before we officially close out the year, and then it will be a very well-earned break for everyone involved.

A huge thank you to our players, coaches, managers, trainers, volunteers, committee members, sponsors, families and supporters for everything you have contributed throughout 2026.

Proud to be a Pirate. 💙💛🏴‍☠️

Coach - Jye u19’s

Coaching these young men this year has been a blessing, this group has so much potential! The Journery so far in 2026 has been full of plenty of ups and downs, but these lads have shown immense tenacity, toughness and grit to get through some tough weeks on the road to GF! From a long list of injuries and unavailability to everyone writing us off, the team have really shown what they are made of at the back end of the season! & with one more to get, I’m proud of these lads no matter what happens!

What has impressed me the most is the progress and willingness to learn and grow as a group! I think the boys have all come together and really improved their footy from week 1 of preseason in January to where we are now in mid-September, I’ve seen young footy players develop their footy but also develop as young men too!

These boys are primed and ready to get the job done on Sunday! It’s business as usual for us, nothing changes, the boys have had their minds set on one thing since week 1 of the finals and they haven’t deterred away from the mission, that mission being… bringing the trophy home to Noosa ! 🏆 🏴‍☠️

This group and this last two seasons coaching the under 19’s has meant a lot to me and I really get a kick out seeing young men who are passionate about the game actually achieving their goals. Whether that’s to win a Grand final or play A grade or NRL one day or even if it’s just to play footy with their mates! I just enjoy helping these young men and giving them the tools to achieve what they want through rugby league!

A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to our incredible U15 Girls and U14 Boys, who have both been crowned 2026 Grand Final Champions! 🏴‍☠️🏆

What an absolutely outstanding achievement from two very special teams. Your determination, courage and commitment have shone brightly throughout the entire season and when the biggest moment arrived, you stood tall, played for one another and proudly represented the Noosa Pirates!

To every player: be incredibly proud of yourselves. You worked hard, backed your teammates and never stopped believing. The heart, passion and resilience you showed throughout the season have been truly inspiring. These premierships are a reward for every training session, every tough game, every sacrifice and every time you chose to keep pushing forward.

To the coaches, managers, trainers, volunteers and families thank you. These victories would not have been possible without the countless hours, encouragement, support and love you have given these players throughout the year. These premierships belong to every single person who helped these teams reach this incredible moment.

Watching our young Pirates celebrate together is what our club is all about. These are the moments and friendships that will stay with you for the rest of your lives. You have made your families, your teammates and the entire Noosa Pirates community unbelievably proud.
