🦀 Dream Debut as Muddies Knock Off Ladder Leaders Kuraby Knights
Scott Campbell, playing his first official game for Muddies and his first ever match on turf, produced a standout performance, cracking 59* (79) to steer Muddies to a commanding win over competition leaders Kuraby Knights.
As if that wasn’t enough, he added two catches and a run out, capping off a dream debut.
Match Report
Kuraby 9/137
Muddies 3/139 (won with 13 balls to spare)
In the final One Day match of the summer season, Muddies lost the toss and were sent in to bowl. On a wicket that looked well balanced and offered consistency while still giving the bowlers something to work with, our pace attack went straight to work. Jacob Richardson struck early, rattling middle stump to claim the first wicket in the second over.
From there, the seamers applied relentless pressure, never allowing Kuraby to settle or build a meaningful partnership. Lachlan Barrett and Peter Fitzpatrick were tasked with closing out the innings. While Fitzy was unlucky not to pick up more wickets himself, his economy rate was crucial in locking down one end. Lachie, meanwhile, was virtually unplayable, finishing with an outstanding 3/20 (6). A complete bowling performance restricted Kuraby to 9/137.
Chasing the target required discipline, something Muddies have consistently shown this season. Opener John Barrett did what Johnny does best, calmly navigating the new ball and laying a strong foundation. Enter Scott Campbell at number four, playing his first turf match and returning to cricket after a 10 year hiatus. Strong performances in the nets earned him the role, and he repaid that faith in spades with a composed, intelligent innings.
When it was time to accelerate, Scotty and Shaun Blake put their foot down. Shaun’s physio will be licking his lips knowing he won't lose him as a client anytime soon as his back was working overtime on a few air swings, but when Shaun connected, the ball was heading straight for the car park. It was a thrilling chase and an exciting game to be part of and witness.
P.S. I missed last week’s match report due to food poisoning, but it was another outstanding team performance. Fitzy bagged a 5fa, putting us in a position to enforce the follow on. A huge effort all round to bag the victory.
