Muscle fibres are recruited according to the size principle: low-threshold motor units activate first, and higher-threshold units are recruited as force demands increase. Training close to muscular failure ensures that a larger proportion of muscle fibres are activated during a set, which increases the hypertrophic stimulus.

Research comparing training intensities consistently shows that sets performed near failure—typically within a few repetitions of technical failure—produce greater muscle growth than sets stopped too early. This does not mean every set must reach absolute failure, but productive hypertrophy training requires effort that is genuinely challenging.
