Pleasant conditions, an excellent course and good camaraderie with our fellow clubs made for a pleasant afternoon for us at the Ipswich Round of the SEQ Cross Country Series this afternoon.

There was some very strong running from Emilia Schulze, Kristina Kersten and Daisy Carter taking out their Divisions of the Women’s 4k, 6k and 8k respectively and I thought our team performed very well on the whole.

A big thanks to Vic Pascoe and his loyal band of Ipswich Athletic Club helpers for putting on a very enjoyable event on one of the best Limestone Park course configurations we have encountered.

It’s not exactly for sheep stations but see-sawing battles with our neighbours Toowong Harriers have been going on pretty much since our club was formed in the 1960s so I’m sure once again there’ll be plenty of fun banter going on with them and our third-placed hosts Ipswich up at Limestone Park on Saturday.

Leading their Divisions individually are Kristina Kersten in the Under 20 Women’s and Cam Cox in the Under 18 Men’s.

Entries close 9am tomorrow at the Queensland Athletics website which also has the programme.

This Queensland Day we are heading to Ipswich for Round 7 of the South East Queensland Cross Country Series.

In the Michael Schultz Premiership, Ashgrove sit a top of the leaderboard with 279 points, over Toowong on 276 and Ipswich on 250.

A reminder that the Queensland Cross Country Relays for Schools and Clubs are coming up on the 20th June with entries closing on the 16th June.

It was certainly a huge day for our athletes at the Met North Regional Cross Country Trials today at Pine Rivers Park.

I have been attending this event since 1984 and certainly today was the best all round performance for our club’s runners as a whole so a big thanks to all of our athletes, parents, coaches and officials involved.

Whether they qualified through to States or not everyone absolutely ran their hearts out.

The weather was cool early and conditions were still good for most of the programme although by the time of the last couple of races for the 13 years it had certainly warmed up.

Making it through to the School States at Highfields, Toowoomba on 18th/19th July were:

3rd 10 years Boys 2k Fraser Lake

6th 11 years Girls 3k Amelia Kingsnorth

2nd 11 years Boys 3k Henry Dale

1st 12 years Girls 3k Jo-Jo Little

1st 12 years Boys 3k Patrick Reid

4th 12 years Boys 3k Finn Jackson

6th 12 years Boys 3k Elliott Stannard

This week’s venue for the SEQ Cross Country Series of Limestone Park, Ipswich is one of Queensland’s most heavily used Cross Country courses having already hosted the Queensland All Schools and GPS Cross Country meets this season.

Originally set up as a lime-burning quarry in 1827 using convict labour, its usage transitioned to a horse park in 1894 and then a golf course in 1897.

In the post-war era it increasingly became a central sporting hub for the city of Ipswich and other sports that thrive there now include AFL, Rugby League, Basketball, Netball and Cricket along with a PCYC.

Ipswich and District Athletic Club was formed in 1978 and is one of Queensland’s leading clubs in track and field having fielded 73 teams at last season’s State Relays and finished third during the Track and Field Shield season.

The club uses Bill Patterson oval which is the start/finish area on Saturday as it’s home ground.

Ipswich parkrun is also based at the park.

In 1989 the park was home to the National Cross Country won in convincing fashion by Steve Moneghetti.

With wide open spaces and a series of long sweeping uphills and downhills it’s pretty much the perfect cross country venue and I’m often amazed by how well athletes can run immediately after doing a cross country race there.

It’s a venue that really provides inspiration to all communities as to what grassroots sport can aspire to be.

Entries close for this Saturday’s meet at the Queensland Athletics website at 9am Friday which also has the programme.
