VALE HIDDI BET (NÉE FROEHLINGSDORF)
It is with profound sadness that Softball SA acknowledges the passing of Hiddi Bet (b. Hilde Froehlingsdorf), whose recent passing was touchingly honoured by the Walkerville Softball Club earlier this week.
Records from our history book ‘Diamond Duels’ paint a picture of the strong, tough, and elite competitor she was behind the plate as a catcher across state and national arenas.
Hiddi leaves behind a memorable legacy on the diamond as a revered player, competing during an era when the Walkerville Cats were a dominant force in the competition.
As a proud South Australian representative, she was an Under 16 State rep in 1981 and 1982, Under 19 State rep from 1983–1985 (Captain & Team MVP in 1985).
Called up to the Open Women’s team as a 17 year old in 1984, and again playing in 1987, 1990 and 1991.
Her extraordinary form in 1987 earned her the team MVP and selection to the Australian National Training Squad Camp at the AIS in April/May 1987. Locally, her career reached another pinnacle in 1992 when she was awarded the Kath Correll Medal as the A-Grade Player of the Year.
Whether known as Hilde Froehlingsdorf in her early representative days or Hiddi (Hidi) Bet to her beloved Walkerville family, her impact on our community was immeasurable.
Softball SA extends our deepest, most heartfelt condolences to Hiddi’s family, her friends, and those who knew her in the softball community.

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dear friend, teammate, and Life Member, Hidi Bet.
Hidi was a proud and much-loved member of the Walkerville Cats, playing A Grade throughout the ’80s and ’90s and contributing to many premiership successes during a wonderful era for our club.
Hidi was kind, warm and generous, with an energy that drew people to her. There was very little she wouldn’t do for anyone, and she had a wonderful way of putting others first. She had a big smile, a warm hug, and a heart that welcomed everyone.
Hidi was one of those special people who was liked by everyone who met her and deeply loved by those fortunate enough to know her well.
Through her many years with the Walkerville Cats, Hidi formed lifelong friendships built on a love of the game, shared experiences, and plenty of laughter. Her friendship and unwavering support of our club meant a great deal to us and will always be remembered.
Our thoughts and love are with Rob, Hidi’s family, and her close circle of friends at this very difficult time.
We feel very fortunate to have had Hidi as part of the Walkerville Cats family for so many years. Thank you, Hidi, for the friendship, the memories and the laughter. You will be deeply missed and always remembered 💐 🫶
