My son scored his first goal this weekend, and I shouted in my native language.

Then I cheered in the language of his school. Then I heard the language of our community all around me, and I felt a little self-conscious.

It was my first time cheering for my child at a game, and my first time doing it outside the place I am from.

Everyone around me was cheering in that language, and I thought...maybe I should too?

So I did. It felt unnatural at first, and more natural as time went on.

The vacations get posted. The hard days don’t.

Our marriage is perfect. Our kids are thriving. Life abroad is easy. That’s the caption underneath all of them, mine included some days.

None of that is the full picture. It’s just the one photo we chose to post.

The dream is real. So are the two years it took to make one friend. So is the night we are both too tired to speak. So is the day you’re crying because you’re sick and your child is sick and you have no help.

So what are we all hiding from? I don’t think it’s the hard days themselves. I think it’s what it might mean to say them out loud, that admitting the dream has weight in it somehow makes the dream less real.

It doesn’t. It just makes it true.

They moved for her career.

He said yes because he loves her, it made sense and he believed in this life they were building together.

And now...neither one of them is saying what is actually true.

Two capable adults made a clear choice together, and agreeing feels like it means you are not allowed to struggle.

So she carries the exhaustion.
He carries the isolation.
The distance between them grows in silence...not from a lack of love, but from a lack of language for what this transition is actually doing to both of them at once.

This is the part of expat life that the relocation package does not cover.

She said it like it was a confession.

“You’re the only person who speaks to this stuff. Everyone else pretends everything is perfect.”

I keep coming back to the second half of that sentence, not the first.

Because it’s not that people don’t feel the hard part. It’s that somewhere along the way, we all signed an invisible agreement... an unspoken contract that says: we perform okay, so nobody else has to feel their own not-okay.

I see this constantly with the families living this life abroad. The ones who followed a job, or a partner’s job, across an ocean. The ones raising kids in a language that isn’t their own. The ones who left an entire support system behind to build a life here. Everything is going right, and there’s a quiet identity grief underneath it that nobody gave them permission to name.

So they carry it alone: in the group chat, at pickup and at the birthday party. Capable, composed, and completely unspoken to.
I’ve never been interested in performing okay. I’d rather be the person you can say the real thing to, even if it means walking across a patio to say it.

You can be proud of the life you built and still have a morning where all of it feels like too much.

I used to think that meant I wasn’t grateful enough. Not resilient enough. Not cut out for a life I chose this deliberately.

It’s not that.

Living between worlds is genuinely complex, and the parents doing it well aren’t the ones who never struggle. They’re the ones who stopped pretending they don’t.

He held me for thirty seconds today. Just a regular hug, nothing dramatic. Tears came before I even understood why, a question surfacing right behind them: can I count on you?

Not “do I love you.” Not “do you love me.” Something quieter, and honestly harder.

Can I count on you to show up for me in the way I need now, not the way I needed years ago?

In the beginning, love runs on its own, little effort required. However, the version of you at year three isn’t the version at year ten. He’s not who he was either. Both of you keep becoming someone slightly new, without ever agreeing to it out loud.

Living abroad, this often looks fine for a long time, until slowly, more of the weight starts landing on just the two of you. That pressure finds its way into the relationship, whether you invited it in or not. Additionally, being consistently outside of your comfort zone quietly asks something of you.

That’s not a warning sign. It’s often exactly where the growth is trying to happen, if we let it.

Sometimes it shows up in the body, as grief we didn’t know we were carrying. Sometimes it shows up as an invitation or conversation.

Sometimes it’s small: he makes the coffee before I’m even up. I pick up the kids from the bus, because I can feel he wants a few more minutes of work before dinner. A kiss before he leaves, most days rushed, most days still there.

Sometimes it’s bigger: I tell him I need his support and his patience, calls at night are eating my evenings and I can’t do it alone. He tells me sometimes he needs a moment to process before he responds. And sometimes, one of us finally says out loud, maybe we need help getting through this.

So many of us move through seasons like this and quietly think, this means we’re falling apart. I want you to hear me: this is not your relationship falling apart. This is what it takes for love to keep aging well, tending to it on purpose, long after it stopped running on its own.
