OYDC Ippon Finishes Third at Japanese Judo Cup.

OYDC Ippon produced a strong performance at the Japanese Judo Cup hosted at OYDC Zambia sports development centre, finishing third overall after an impressive medal haul.

The OYDC athletes collected seven gold, three silver and five bronze medals, giving the team a total of 15 medals and helping consolidate its place among the top performers at the competition.

The performance was a reflection of the growing strength of judo development at OYDC, with young athletes demonstrating skill, determination and competitive experience across the different weight categories.

A key contributor to this development has been the Teulings Youth Sports Challenge, which has provided young athletes with valuable opportunities to compete, gain experience and develop their sporting abilities.

Through regular competition and exposure, the challenge has helped nurture emerging talent and prepare young athletes for bigger competitions such as the Japanese Judo Cup. The experience gained through these platforms has contributed to athletes building confidence, improving their technical abilities and developing the competitive mindset required to win medals.

The success of OYDC Ippon at the Japanese Judo Cup therefore represents more than just a strong tournament result. It also highlights the impact of sustained investment in youth sport and the importance of creating opportunities for young athletes to compete and develop.

The Japanese Judo Cup also attracted athletes from Zimbabwe, adding an international dimension to the tournament and giving Zambian judokas an opportunity to compete against athletes from the region.

The presence of the Zimbabwean competitors helped raise the level of competition while providing an important platform for athletes to gain international exposure and experience.

For OYDC Ippon, the seven gold, three silver and five bronze medals mark another positive step in the development of its young judokas. The results also underline the value of initiatives such as the Teulings Youth Sports Challenge in creating a strong pipeline of young sporting talent.

As the athletes continue to train and compete, OYDC Ippon will hope to build on its third-place finish and turn the experience gained from competitions such as the Japanese Judo Cup into even greater success in the future.

HAZ Champion of Champions Tournament Culminates at OYDC Zambia

The prestigious Handball Association of Zambia (HAZ) Champion of Champions Tournament is underway at the OYDC Zambia Multipurpose Hall, with the two-day competition set to conclude today with the final matches.

The tournament started yesterday, bringing together top handball players to compete for the coveted Champion of Champions title.

As the tournament enters its final day, attention now turns to the decisive matches, where the champions will be crowned.

OYDC Zambia continues to provide a conducive environment for the hosting of major sporting events, contributing to the growth and development of sport in Zambia.

36TH JAPANESE AMBASSADOR’S JUDO CUP OFFICIALLY OPENED AT OYDC ZAMBIA

The 36th Edition of the Japanese Ambassador’s Judo Cup has officially been opened at the OYDC Zambia Sports Development Centre, with the Centre’s Judo Hall providing the stage for two days of intense competition as young and senior judokas battle for honours.

The prestigious tournament, organised by the Judo Association of Zambia (JAZ) with support from the Embassy of Japan, brings together athletes, coaches, technical officials, administrators, partners and stakeholders to celebrate the development of judo and the longstanding friendship between Zambia and Japan.

Representing OYDC Zambia Acting Chief Executive Officer Benjamin Tembo at the official opening ceremony was Mwange Kampamba, who joined other distinguished guests in welcoming athletes and participants to the Centre.

Speaking during the ceremony, Guest of Honour Kangwa Chileshe, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts, represented by Sports Director Gibson Muyaule, reaffirmed Government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for sport to contribute to youth development, national unity, health promotion and employment.

Mr Muyaule described the Japanese Ambassador’s Judo Cup as an important event on Zambia’s sporting calendar and commended the partnership between the Embassy of Japan and the Judo Association of Zambia for contributing to the growth and development of judo in the country.

He further highlighted the 2024 National Sports Policy, which promotes broad participation in sport and physical activities regardless of age, gender, ability, social status or geographical location. Events such as the Japanese Ambassador’s Judo Cup provide an important platform for participation, talent identification and athlete development.

Also speaking at the ceremony, His Excellency Mikami Akiteru, Japanese Ambassador to Zambia, described the 36th edition of the tournament as a significant achievement and commended the athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers and all those who contributed to making the competition possible.

The Ambassador encouraged the participating judokas to listen to their coaches, respect their opponents and, most importantly, enjoy the experience of competing.

Judo Association of Zambia General Secretary Mabvuto Ng’uni welcomed all participants and guests to the 36th edition of the competition, describing the tournament as more than just a sporting event but a celebration of the strong and enduring friendship between Zambia and Japan through the shared values of judo.

He noted that over its 36 editions, the tournament has provided a platform for judokas to compete, learn and develop, while contributing to the identification and nurturing of young talent and the continued growth of judo in Zambia.

The Judo Association of Zambia also expressed appreciation to the Embassy of Japan for its continued support towards judo in Zambia and the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts for its support, including assistance towards the shipment of competition mats from China.

The official opening ceremony was attended by His Excellency Mr Mikami Akiteru, Japanese Ambassador to Zambia; Hellen Mebrahtu, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) representative; Besa Chibwe, Deputy Commissioner for Refugees; Moses Mutende, President of the Judo Association of Zimbabwe; Sombwa Sombwa Knox Musunsa, Chief Executive Officer of the National Sports Council, represented by Lombe Monica; Mabvuto Ng’uni, General Secretary of the Judo Association of Zambia; and Mwange Kampamba, representing OYDC Zambia Acting CEO Benjamin Tembo, among other distinguished guests and stakeholders.

OYDC Zambia is proud to host the 36th Japanese Ambassador’s Judo Cup at its Judo Hall, reaffirming the Centre’s commitment to providing quality sporting facilities and creating opportunities for athletes to train, compete and develop their talents.

The two-day competition commenced today, 29 August, with Pre-Cadets and Cadets taking to the tatami, while the Seniors will compete tomorrow, 30 August, as the tournament concludes.

TEULINGS YOUTH SPORTS CHALLENGE MATCH DAY 8 DELIVERS EXCITING FOOTBALL AND BASEBALL5 ACTION

The Teulings Youth Sports Challenge (TYSC) continued today as athletes took part in an action-packed Match Day 8 featuring exciting football and Baseball5 fixtures.

The football matches provided plenty of goals and impressive performances, with teams battling for valuable points as the competition continues to gain momentum.

In the girls’ category, OYDC Flying Queens produced one of the standout performances of the day, cruising to a commanding 6–0 victory over Olympic Africa Queens. The Flying Queens dominated proceedings and demonstrated excellent attacking play and teamwork.

Ubuntu Queens also secured an important victory, defeating Zani Moune Queens 3–1 in a competitive encounter.

Meanwhile, OYDC Queens continued their impressive run with a convincing 4–0 win over KK Queens, producing another strong display that underlined their determination in the competition.

In the boys’ category, OYDC Boys collected three points after recording a 3–0 walkover victory over Mighty Rangers.

Beacon of Hope came from a strong performance to defeat Ubuntu Boys 3–1, while Olympic Africa Boys secured a comfortable 3–0 victory over Telos, adding another positive result to their campaign.

Beyond football, Match Day 8 also featured Baseball5, giving young athletes an opportunity to compete in another fast-paced and exciting sporting discipline.

The Baseball5 matches provided a platform for participants to demonstrate their skills, communication, coordination and teamwork. The inclusion of Baseball5 further reflects the Teulings Youth Sports Challenge’s commitment to providing young people with opportunities to participate in multiple sports and develop their sporting abilities.

The competition continues to use sport as a powerful tool for youth development, promoting values such as discipline, teamwork, respect, leadership and excellence both on and off the field.

As the Teulings Youth Sports Challenge progresses, teams across the different sporting disciplines will continue to battle for honours while gaining valuable competitive experience.

Match Day 8 has come to a close, but the journey continues. The excitement, competition and determination among the young athletes promise even more action as the Teulings Youth Sports Challenge moves into its next stage.

German Volunteers Bid Farewell to OYDC Zambia.

German volunteers who have been supporting programmes at the OYDC Zambia Sports Development Centre have bid farewell to the institution after making a valuable contribution to the development of sport and young athletes.

The volunteers have been actively involved in various roles since joining OYDC Zambia, including coaching and supporting athletes across different sporting disciplines. Through their dedication, they have contributed to the development of young athletes while also strengthening the Centre’s programmes and activities.

Speaking during the farewell, OYDC Zambia Acting Chief Executive Officer Benjamin Tembo thanked the volunteers for their commitment and the valuable contribution they made during their time at the Centre.

Mr. Tembo said OYDC Zambia appreciated the time, effort and expertise the volunteers invested in working with athletes and supporting the Centre's programmes. He wished them success and all the best as they return home and continue with their respective journeys.

As a gesture of appreciation, OYDC Zambia presented the departing volunteers with commemorative T-shirts featuring Zambian colours. The gift was presented as a symbol of appreciation and a lasting reminder of their time, experiences and contribution to OYDC Zambia.

The Centre expressed hope that the volunteers will continue to cherish the memories created during their stay in Zambia and remain ambassadors of the friendships and sporting partnerships established during their time at OYDC Zambia.
