MATERO MAGIC AND LUSAKA BASKET QUEENS CROWNED BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS

Matero Magic Basketball Team have won the Smart Invoice Basketball Championship while Lusaka Basket Queens also won the title in the Women's Category.

The Championship was organised in Lusaka by Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) to raise awareness about Smart Invoice, Zambia's electronic invoicing system.

14 teams from various parts of the country participated.

Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary Joe Kalusa witnessed the final games.

He encouraged sports men and women to embrace voluntary compliance to regulations, including tax regulations.

ZRA Acting Commissioner General Richard Kapasa said the tax authority will continue promoting healthy habits as communities are engaged on tax matters.

Mr. Kapasa said, the championship is aimed at encouraging use of Smart Invoice by businesses.

He urged the public to ask for receipts after transaction, as doing so contributes to national development.

“It is mandatory for Value Added Tax (VAT) registered taxpayers to register for Smart Invoice, and issuance of a Smart Invoice is a legal requirement, and failing to comply can lead to penalties,” he said.

The three-day championship which started on Friday, closed yesterday , 22nd February, 2026.

NOCZ Reaffirms Support for Well-Governed Associations

Alfred Foloko, President of the National Olympic Committee of Zambia (NOCZ), has reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to supporting sports associations that demonstrate good governance and effective strategic planning.

Foloko expressed satisfaction with the successful FIBA Plus Strategic Planning Workshop, hosted by the Zambia Basketball Federation from February 13 to 16, 2026, in Lusaka. The workshop included the participation of FIBA Head of National Federations Michal Konency.

On Tuesday, 17 February, Zambia Basketball Federation President Maziko Phiri and General Secretary Rodrick Ndhlovu, accompanied by Konency, paid a courtesy call on the NOCZ Secretariat to present an update on the outcomes of the strategic planning process.

Phiri revealed that the planning phase had been concluded and that once finalised, the strategic plan would be shared with the NOCZ. Ndhlovu highlighted several key areas discussed during the workshop, including governance strengthening, constitutional amendments, youth development, and technical capacity building.

Konency emphasised the importance of collaboration between national sports associations and National Olympic Committees, noting that such partnerships are essential for the growth of sport not only in Zambia but across Africa. He added that structured planning and cooperation would be critical in preparing athletes and federations for global events such as the Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026.

Concluding the courtesy call, NOCZ Secretary General Boniface Kambikambi encouraged the Zambia Basketball Federation to finalise its strategic plan and ensure broad stakeholder engagement. He reaffirmed that the NOCZ stands ready to support the federation’s programmes in line with its strategic priorities and governance standards.

FIBA Head of National Federations Meets Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts to Strengthen Basketball Development in Zambia

The Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Hon. Elvis Nkandu, today received Mr. Michal Konecny, FIBA Head of National Federations, who is in Zambia to conduct capacity development programmes for the Zambia Basketball Federation (ZBF).

Mr. Konecny paid a courtesy call on the Minister alongside Mr. Maziko Phiri, President of ZBF, and Mr. Sombwa Musunsa, Chief Executive Officer of the National Sports Council of Zambia.

In his remarks, Hon. Nkandu expressed gratitude to FIBA for its continued support to Zambian basketball, including the donation of equipment through AUSC Region 5. He emphasized the importance of investing in basketball infrastructure to enable athlete development and expand opportunities for young people across the country.

“Basketball has immense potential for youth development. With FIBA’s support, we can build the structures and facilities needed to grow the sport nationwide,” said Hon. Nkandu.

Earlier, Mr. Musunsa highlighted the need for a structured basketball development programme anchored in a sound Strategic Plan. FIBA confirmed that such a plan will be developed this year for ZBF, marking a significant step toward strengthening the federation’s governance and long-term growth.

This engagement underscores Zambia’s commitment to elevating basketball as a key sport within the nation. With FIBA’s technical expertise and strategic guidance, ZBF is poised to enhance grassroots development, improve organizational capacity, and create pathways for athletes to compete at regional and international levels.

Zambia Basketball Federation (ZBF) President Maziko Phiri, accompanied by ZBF General Secretary Rodrick Ndhlovu, presented a basketball to the wife of the late Humphrey Banda in a symbolic gesture of honor and remembrance.

The late Banda was a towering figure in the basketball community and beyond, whose contribution to the sport went far beyond the court.

A passionate mentor and servant of the game, he played a pivotal role in nurturing and guiding young talent, many of whom have gone on to feature for top clubs and represent the national team with distinction.

As we lay our beloved brother to rest, his legacy continues to live on through the lives he touched, the players he inspired, and the game he so selflessly served.

May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his dedication to basketball forever be remembered and celebrated.
