THEY DEFEND. YOU ADAPT.

Last week, we looked at using an arm drag from closed guard to create the angle to take the back.

But what happens when your opponent postures up and won't let you get there?

You don't force it.

This week's Gi technique follows the next step — using their defence to set up a pendulum sweep instead.

Good Jiu-Jitsu isn't about having one answer. It's about recognising what your opponent gives you and having another option ready.

One attack leads to the next.

LADIES, SELF-DEFENCE STARTS BEFORE THE FIGHT.

We spend a lot of time showing the techniques we practise in our Women Only Self Defence classes.

But what happens before things get to that point?

As women, we're often taught to be polite. To be accommodating. To make ourselves smaller. To avoid making a situation uncomfortable or escalating things.

But sometimes, that instinct to keep the peace can mean ignoring our own boundaries or staying in a situation longer than we should.

Self-defence isn't just about knowing what to do when someone puts their hands on you.

It's also about recognising when something isn't right, trusting your instincts, creating distance, setting boundaries, and knowing that you don't owe anyone your compliance.

You don't have to wait until a situation becomes physical to take yourself seriously.

Our Women Only Self Defence classes are completely free, and beginners are always welcome.

Confidence is a skill. Train it.

SO PROUD OF THESE TWO.

Yesterday, two of our girls stepped onto the mats and competed — and we couldn't be prouder.

Competing takes courage. It's one thing to train in class, but stepping out there in front of everyone and putting yourself to the test takes something extra.

One of them wasn't sure she wanted to go back out for her second match. She almost didn't.

But she took a breath, stepped up, and did it anyway.

That moment is what Jiu-Jitsu is all about.

Not always winning. Not always feeling confident. But having the courage to face something difficult and give it a go.

Well done, girls. We're incredibly proud of you both.

You win or you learn.

A LITTLE LOOK AT LIFE ON THE MATS.

Another week of learning, hard rounds, good laughs, and plenty of time spent together on the mats.

Different classes, different people, same goal — keep showing up, keep learning, and keep improving.

That’s what Brothers in Grappling is all about.

WHO SAID LEARNING JIU-JITSU HAS TO BE BORING?

This was our first go at Bulldog Island — a little game we tried when it was just these two on the mats.

A little pushing, a little problem-solving, and plenty of laughs. All while working on balance, base, movement and body awareness.

They also got taught a few extra tricks for dealing with bigger and stronger training partners, because technique, timing and a little creativity can go a long way.

The kids might think they're just playing...

We know they're learning.

CREATE THE ANGLE. TAKE THE BACK.

Sometimes you don't need to push through your opponent—you just need to get around them.

This week's Gi technique starts from closed guard with an arm drag that creates the angle to take the back.

Position beats strength.

KEEP IT SIMPLE.

Sometimes the basics are the most effective.

This week's No-Gi technique is a basic single-leg takedown — a reminder that good Jiu-Jitsu starts with solid fundamentals, good timing, and good positioning.

Master the basics. Build from there.

A GOOD WEEK ON THE MATS.

Fuller classes, hard rounds, plenty of learning, and a few new faces joining us throughout the week.

We might have forgotten to grab the post-class selfies on Monday, but we'll take that as a sign that everyone was too busy training. 😂

Another week of showing up, putting in the work, and enjoying Jiu-Jitsu together.

See you on the mats next week!

LADIES, WOULD YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO?

Self-defence isn't about being the strongest person in the room. It's about knowing how to respond when things don't go according to plan.

Here's a little look at one of the skills we work on in our Women's Only Self Defence classes—first the technique, then putting it into practice.

Our classes are completely free, and beginners are always welcome.
