Mustang Wheelchair Rugby Club

Mustang Wheelchair Rugby Club We're more than just a team - we're a community inspiring athletes and individuals alike. The Mustangs are a Bloemfontein based wheelchair rugby club.

Join us as we smash barriers, shatter stereotypes, and show the world what it means to be unstoppable. This group has been established for the members, friends and supporters of wheelchair rugby. This page is dedicated to our club and to wheelchair rugby. Here you will find information about us and our sport, including finding out what we are up to and how to get involved with us. Wheelchair rugby

is an invaluable way to regain independence after being born with a disability or after suffering a disability and we believe there is no better sport that accomplishes this. Wheelchair rugby is one of the fastest growing wheelchair sports in the world. Wheelchair rugby is the only full contact wheelchair sport. Whether an experienced or rookie player, we are always looking to attract new players to ensure our future success. Should you be interested, or if you would like to attend one of our practice sessions, or have any questions please feel free to contact us. MWRC is a proud member of South African Wheelchair Rugby (SAWCR) and a proudly affiliated member of Free State Rugby Union (FRU).

Koos Jacobs — A Legacy of Dedication and Passion

Jacobus Johannes Jacobs, fondly known as Koos, has been a cornerstone of South African wheelchair rugby for nearly two decades. His journey began in 2006 in East London when national team player Peter John Truter introduced the sport to local players, sparking the formation of the Bullfrogs, East London’s first wheelchair rugby team. Koos quickly rose through the ranks, representing South Africa in international tournaments across Australia (2007), New Zealand (2009), and England (2015), with his commitment shining through even amid funding challenges. After stepping away from the sport in 2015, Koos was invited by Jared McIntyre to join the Mustangs (2019), officially taking to the court in 2022. His leadership and experience helped shape the team’s early milestones, including organizing their first match at Bobbies Park in 2011. Retiring permanently at Nationals 2025 at age 54, Koos reflects with pride on his time with the Mustangs, calling it an honor to play alongside such a remarkable group. His heartfelt wish for the team: to keep playing for the love of the game and never lose sight of its joy.

Enjoy your retirement, wheelchair rugby will surely forever be your second home!
