"The Day"
The morning started with exactly what every buffalo hunter hopes for—fresh tracks. The spoor was fresh, and the dung was still warm. He was close.
The team took up the tracks and soon bumped two bulls from their hidey holes beneath a dense umbrella thorn thicket. Unfortunately, the buffalo were one step ahead and slipped away before an opportunity presented itself.
The spoor was picked up again, but a shifting wind forced a change of plans. The hunters had to reroute and work their way around the bulls to stay undetected. Then PH Rudi spotted oxpeckers and knew they couldn't be far away. What followed was a 150-metre crawl through the bush to get a closer look.
After all that effort, they managed to get within 20 metres of the bulls. But true to their reputation, they rose and disappeared without so much as a crash through the bushes—vanishing silently into the thick cover.
The afternoon brought a change in strategy.
After days of tracking, crawling, circling, and countless miles on foot, persistence finally paid off. The plan came together, the opportunity presented itself, and our hunter was able to take his buffalo.
A hard-earned trophy and a hunt that perfectly captures what buffalo hunting is all about—patience, determination, and never giving up when the odds are against you.
Congratulations on a fantastic buffalo bull and a hunt none of us will soon forget.
