“They don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” - Michael Boyle
The most important trait we look for in coaches is if they are a CNP: Certified nice person. If you can’t connect, you can’t coach - regardless of the knowledge you possess.
Here, Coach Jack breaks down the top 5 most important soft skills required to become a great coach to our new intern squad.
1️⃣How you present yourself
Attire, hygiene, and demeanor all contribute to your presence.
2️⃣ Energy management
Coaching is a performance. Aim to bring consistent energy to each session.
3️⃣ Coach-ability
Leave your ego at the door. The best coaches are always open to correction and learning.
4️⃣ Being a valued teammate
Artificial harmony achieves nothing. Shared standards create cohesion. Take initiative to help your teammate when possible and they’ll do the same for you.
5️⃣ Adaptabilty
Coach the person in front of you and meet them where they’re at.
Don’t prioritize being the smartest person in the weight room. Instead, be the person who builds the strongest relationships.
