Important Information! Fi****ms Safety Course Eligibility Cards per Colorado Senate Bill 25-003
Senate Bill 25-003 was passed by the Colorado Legislature in 2025 despite the opposition from Sheriff Steve Reams. This legislation requires those who wish to purchase a Specified Semi-automatic Firearm (SSF) identified on a list published by the Colorado Department of Revenue to complete a process prior to the purchase of an SSF.
Here are the steps in the process:
Submit an application through the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW). These applications are NOT available through the Sheriff’s Office.
Applicants must obtain their own background check of National and Colorado criminal history and judicial records, along with an attestation from the vendor of the background check.
The applicant must submit their application with CPW along with the following required documents to the Weld County Sheriff’s Office:
• Background check,
• Attestation letter from the vendor,
• Current Photo ID
• $52 fee (established by CPW, not the Weld County Sheriff’s Office) to the Weld County Sheriff’s Office. The Weld County Sheriff’s Office will not charge any more than the legislative mandated $52 fee established by CPW.
You may complete the entire process online or come into the Weld County Sheriff’s Office at 1950 O St. in Greeley and bring printed copies of all the above documents.
If approved, you will receive an approval letter and your fi****ms safety course eligibility card in the mail. Once you receive this card, you will be able to take the course established by CPW to obtain your SSF certificate.
A list of instructors certified to teach the SSF course is available on our website. Once you have your certificate, you can go through the process of purchasing one of the fi****ms on the Colorado Department of Revenue list from a store.
