In honor of Labor Day, I want to recognize the incredible work our swim instructors do every week.
It is hard to put into words all the challenges they meet with patience, creativity and compassion. They are instructors, educators, entertainers, comforters, cheerleaders and sometimes even counselors.
Within one class, an instructor may work with families who have very different parenting styles and expectations. One parent may want their child pushed beyond their comfort zone, while another prefers a slower, calmer approach. Our instructors must understand each swimmer, respect each family and find a way to help every child progress.
With our adaptive swimmers, instructors often go through trial and error to discover how each child learns best. They figure out what motivates them, which teaching strategies work, how far they can safely challenge them and which drills will help them succeed, all while building trust.
I often remind instructors that a private lesson may be the only 30 minutes that week when a child receives the full, uninterrupted attention of an adult. That consistency and one on one connection can create a bond that means more than we may ever realize.
Of course, working with kids also keeps everyone humble! Children will point out every interesting thing they notice about your body, including the acne you would rather not discuss. They may also pinch, slap, scratch or grab your hair.
Despite it all, our instructors keep showing up because they see the value in what they do. They witness the moment a swimmer finally masters a skill and see the excitement and pride on that child’s face.
Most importantly, they know they are teaching skills that can save lives. They are making a real difference for children and families, and that makes every challenging moment worth it.
