📜 GunBroker.com This Day in History — May 18, 1825
Today marks the birthday of Daniel B. Wesson, one of the most influential figures in American fi****ms history.
Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, and brought up on the family farm, at age 18, in 1843, he apprenticed as a gunsmith in Northborough, Mass. During this time, he learned the intricacies of fi****ms manufacturing, including barrel rifling and the assembly of lock mechanisms. Having completed his training in 1846, he went to work for Allen, Brown & Luther in Worcester, where he enhanced his experience in producing rifle barrels. In 1852, he began a partnership with Horace Smith in Norwich, Connecticut, where they worked to refine the Smith-Jennings repeating rifle. This culminated in the formation of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co. in 1855, located in New Haven, Conn. where they produced the S&W Magazine Pistol.
This unique handgun operated via a lever action and had a tubular magazine beneath the barrel. This pistol chambered .31 or .41 caliber “rocket-ball” cartridges. Packed inside the hollow-based lead bullet was a charge of black powder that was ignited by a fulminate cup affixed into the backend of the bullet; making it a self-contained cartridge. The 6” barrel model had a capacity of 10 cartridges. Unfortunately, the small powder charge gave the bullet an anemic velocity of about 500 FPS and it also had issues with gas leakage ands misfires. Only about 2,000 were produced before the company went bankrupt in 1857. Smith & Wesson went on to produce the No.1 .22 RF revolver in 1857, establishing them in the fi****ms world.
