Prioritizing proper speed and strength training makes for serious gains!

While attending 1x/week for the better part of 2 years, Cooper saw improvements. But after making the switch to 2x/week last November his growth has skyrocketed!
Cooper added 2.4 MPH ‼️ to his top speed in just 5 months of 2x/week training 💪

Takeaway for all those athletes out there treating Sports Performance as an after thought: how much better could you play if you were +2MPH faster?! 🤔

Coaching speed is easy when you know what to look for.

Rep 1 (top) lacked sufficient hip flexion and a casting of the shin resulting in a stomping action, hitting the ground flat footed and straight down. This creates breaking forces rather than accelerating, overloads the hamstring, and fails to utilize the natural spring of the Achilles tendon and arch of the foot.

Rep 2 (bottom) greater hip flexion and tighter carry through of lower leg sets foot up with far more space to floor. Now gait cycle is completed more in air so foot strike follows a “down and back” path, driving forces behind athlete and accelerating forward. Elastic and muscular systems are now in better balance and optimal for running fast and efficiently.

Interestingly, you may notice greater ankle extension in back foot too. The reciprocal nature of the legs often means greater flexion in one drives extension in the other. From a frontal plane (not captured here) I would bet we see greater hip hiking as well.

RSP coaches uses a holistic lens to evaluate athletes movement and address key technical, muscular and coordination factors to get athletes faster. That spans far beyond the sprint. We use video analysis, specific constraints, targeted exercises and actions from the track/field to the weight room.

Good luck to as she starts her pro career in Ireland ✨🇮🇪 ⚽️

Anna spent the last 3 months with us looking to stay sharp before making the jump to professional soccer.

In that time she increased her top speed 1 MPH (5%) sharpened her fitnesses and topped off her strength.

We can’t wait to see her in action!

The primary goal of any sports performance or physical preparation should be equipping athletes with the resilience to stay healthy and withstand the demands of their season. Match Fit has an incredible track record of preparing athletes, with most of our college cohorts only missing 1/2 game per season through injury. On top of that our athletes routinely increase speed, power and agility while sharpening their skill.
The four athletes I recently highlighted display exactly how powerful a good program can be as they played nearly every minute of their seasons. That’s the ultimate goal!
