on landing smallmouth fast and sending them back strong. A long fight builds up lactic acid, a leading cause of fish mortality. By using 8 weights, and heavier fluoro, you can safely fight fish quickly. Not to mention the benefit of an 8 weight when throwing bass flies all day in the wind.

In flycast ep. 9 Mike Rosa recaps a wild spring and how he’s fishing summer smallmouth on the Susquehanna.

When it comes to fishing photos Son keeps it simple - and prioritizes the safety of the fish. That fish isn’t out of the water more than three seconds, and it isn’t in your hands more than 20 or 30.

George Costa with this weeks 7/24/26 fishing report

Cooler weather has settled into Central PA. Nighttime temps are dropping into the 50s and daytime highs are only reaching the low 80s.

Morning is the window for dry fly action. Tricos have been good on Spring Creek with a handful of tan caddis and a few Cahills still around. Nymphing is solid through the day - stick with smaller patterns. Streamers are worth a look in low light.

Area streams are running low and clear, but flows are decent after last week’s rain and we’re supposed to get a little more over the weekend. That should only help.

Try early, try late, and expect a slow midday. Be sure to not target trout if stream temps are 68+.

The NRS Raft and Cast Classic is taking place during our 6th Annual Cumberland Valley Fly Fishing and Outdoor Festival.

Row your teammate into position, hit your targets under pressure, and stop the clock. Speed gets you bonus points, but your casts win the day. Grab a partner, sign up as a team of two, and come throw down on Children’s Lake.

Saturday, August 8 · 3–5 PM · Children’s Lake

Summer heat means it’s time to pay attention to stream temperatures.

Trout are a coldwater species, and once water temperatures reach 68°F or higher, the stress of being caught and released can become too much. Carrying a stream thermometer is one of the easiest ways to help protect the fishery.

Whether you prefer a simple stick-on thermometer, a classic analog model, or a digital option, checking the water before you fish only takes a few seconds. As temperatures climb into the 65–67°F range, start thinking about wrapping up your day. At 68°F and above, give trout a break and target warm water species like smallmouth bass or panfish instead.

A small habit can make a big difference for the future of our fisheries.

What a weekend on the water! Huge thanks to everyone who came out for the second annual Bass Thumb Fly Fishing Tournament on the Susquehanna and Juniata Rivers!

Bass Thumb once again supported two causes close to our hearts - Susquehanna Greenway and Project Healing Waters. Every angler who signed up helped protect our rivers and support veterans healing through fly fishing.

Big thanks also to Pizza Boy Brewing Co. for hosting us again this year! Couldn’t ask for a better spot to grab pizza and beer after a long weekend chasing bass.

See you all in 2027!
