An Update on Mr. Bill!
On Thursday, March 19th, after dropping off his daughter Sally at school (along with 3 dozen rice krispie treats for Parent-Teacher conferences), Bill arrived at home and stated something was wrong and he thought he was having a heart attack. His wife, Rachel, called 911, and as we could hear the sirens getting closer, he lost feeling in his arms and legs and started blacking out. Despite that, he was able to walk to the ambulance and collapsed on the gurney, and his heart stopped. He suffered a STEMI, one of the absolute worst types of heart attacks. The ABSOLUTELY AMAZING Waunakee EMS and Fire Department performed CPR on him for 40 minutes!! One of those phenomenal people was Courtney and Mikaela's brother, Josh McWilliams, the Fire Chief!! Josh and Battalion Chief Brian Adler rode with Bill in the ambulance all the way to the hospital along with 4 EMTs. We are forever grateful for everything the EMS and Fire Department did to help Bill.
Bill arrived at the UW Emergency Room and was immediately put on an ECMO machine and ventilator and supported by a team of ASTONISHINGLY WONDERFUL medical staff, which included Little Strokes parents Tim Haumschild and Ashley Mulvey! We are extremely lucky to have had Little Strokes parents involved in literally every single step of the way. Bill was given a less than 25% chance of survival and we were told he would be on ECMO and the ventilator for at least 4 days. Well, if you know Bill, you know he is a FIGHTER! He got off ECMO and the ventilator in a day and a half (Friday night)! He was neurologically intact and ready to recover. Incredibly enough, Bill was well enough to be discharged from the hospital this past Thursday, March 26th. He is currently at home recovering with his wife and 3 daughters.
The bad news is that he cannot get back in the water to teach lessons for at least 8 weeks due to the size of his ECMO surgical incisions and the need to recuperate. We are fortunate enough to have our terrific staff step up and cover most of his lessons this coming week. Lessons for April and May are still up in the air - we may be able to find long-term substitutes for some of his classes, but will most likely end up canceling a large majority of them for the rest of the School Year session. Mr. Bill should be able to return by the Summer Session! We cannot thank our staff enough, especially Mr. Jesse, Courtney, & Mikaela, who took over operations of the pool for Bill & Rachel.
Many have asked how to help. Bill would LOVE to receive videos, calls, emails and cards from his swimmers! In order to ease the strain on Little Strokes, there is a GoFundMe set up to help cover the money that Bill's lessons would bring in, so that we can continue to pay our staff in Bill's absence. Bill teaches close to 20% of the lessons at Little Strokes and the money his lessons bring in cover a large portion of our staff salary.
