A Tribute to Bodybuilding Legends

Remembering Franco Columbu and his extraordinary contribution to bodybuilding.

Today marks the 7th anniversary of the passing of Doug Brignole’s friend and fellow bodybuilder, legendary two-time Mr. Olympia Franco Columbu — August 7, 1941 – August 30, 2019.

Franco, a champion bodybuilder, strength athlete and one of the most recognizable figures of bodybuilding’s Golden Era, left an enduring mark on the sport and generations of athletes who followed.

This wonderful photo of Franco and Doug together captures the camaraderie that connected so many of the great bodybuilders of their generation.

MUSCLE BEACH - MR. & MS. MUSCLE BEACH COMPETITION, INDEPENDENCE DAY.

Today, another group of stellar athletes will step onto the iconic Muscle Beach stage in Venice, California.

For several years, Doug Brignole proudly served as a judge at the annual Mr. & Ms. Muscle Beach competitions.

These photographs from July 4, 2022, capture a few moments from Doug's years at Muscle Beach—celebrating competitors, reconnecting with longtime friends, and serving the bodybuilding community he cared so deeply about.

Thank you to Joe Wheatley and Joe Wheatley Productions for keeping this historic bodybuilding tradition alive.

As competitors take the stage, all of us at the Brignole Biomechanics Institute wish every athlete a memorable competition and continued success in their fitness journey.
