Yesterday’s 10th annual Backcountry Rise may not have been a casual bluebird day in the mountains, but we made the most of it! Only 5 DNF’s on the entire day, some course records, and enough rain showers to last us til late fall made for a dynamic and memorable day in the blast zone backcountry of Mt. St. Helens. An especially HUGE thank you to our still-thawing volunteers who supported the aid stations out on course!!

We’ll get the post-race letter sent out tomorrow, which will include race photos and final official results. Congrats to everyone who raced yesterday, you are TOUGH and resilient— noone can take that away from you now!

Enjoy these wonderful preview photos from Steven Mortinson

Can’t wait to greet everyone Friday evening with the traditional spaghetti dinner, trivia night and world class views of the Mt. St. Helens blast zone! Race day’s forecasted conditions are looking lovely.

Turns out we have a world class trail race experience right here in our own backyard ;)

We are two weeks out from Backcountry Rise near Mount St. Helens, our second oldest event and the 10th annual!

To celebrate, join us and Brooks Running at Seven Hills Running Shop next Sunday Aug 23rd at 10am for a fun shoe demo, group run and race bib/swag pickup if you’re in the Seattle area!!

If you’ve never experienced the northern blast zone backcountry of the Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, sign up soon because Backcountry Rise is almost sold out. It’s always a uniquely amazing community experience too, with the Friday evening spaghetti dinner (free for participants) and trivia night inside the Visitor Center, followed by the campout. We wake to truly world class sunrise views on race morning and race courses so stunning you’d swear they were fake.

Yesterday, we made the decision to cancel Wy’east Trailfest. The Grasshopper Fire has been spreading rather rapidly to the west, elevating evacuation orders and forest closure order across the eastern Mt Hood National Forest. All participants, volunteers and event partners have been notified.

2027 Wy’east Trailfest will move up a month to July 24-25, in an effort to avoid as much fire season exposure as possible while ensuring adequate snowmelt and trail maintenance prior to race weekend.

Massive respect and appreciation to emergency managers and firefighters working day and night to tame this stubborn and resilient beast, the Grasshopper Fire. There is MUCH work ahead to heal these mountain trails.

Thank you to everyone who has reached out to express support and kindness. The big heart of the trail community is being felt. ❤️

It is with a heavy heart that Hood Hundred came to an early conclusion this morning. The event started with a steady west wind, resulting in clear skies for our runners. On late Saturday night our favorable west winds died down and smoke began to accumulate on our course.

After continuous monitoring of the AQI we began observing worsening conditions with no foreseeable improvement. In short, we felt it was no longer safe to allow the event to continue. At 3:30 AM on Sunday morning we made the difficult decision to halt runners at the aid stations. By the time morning came, the air quality had deteriorated considerably more.

We are incredibly proud of the efforts of all the runners and endlessly thank you for the support of their crews and our wonderful volunteers. Racers will receive a post-event email within the next couple of days, which will outline next steps.

We’ve certainly made one great big pitcher of lemonade this weekend.

Switching Hood Hundred to a multi-loop format felt like a radical departure from the original course, but it’s exceeded every expectation. The energy from runners, crews, volunteers, and spectators has been incredible.

And honestly, if you have to run loops, there aren’t many we’d choose over this one.
