This journey of endurance sport was completely by accident. It was not a straight line either. Regardless, being where I am now is nowhere near where I envisioned myself being the very first time I attempted to walk around the block. Don't let the smiling in the photos fool you, there have more days of tears than smiles during the years of this journey. Too many struggles and painful life lessons to list here in this post.

But I'm here now in spite of the negative choices and words of myself and others. The theme of this journey is to discover who I really am with no mask and no agenda. So far it has led me to be part of some special and epic things, I wonder where else it will lead.

HUGE thank you to the event coordinators and staff, the volunteers Black Hills 100. You guys are the best!

The start to the 50 was not as rambunctious as the 100. I chalk that up to it being an unreasonable hour in the morning. If it wasn't so dark on the way out to the start, I would've included the beautiful backdrop to this course.

Even though there were times I was really suffering, I still remain grateful that I was lucky enough to be out there on this very challenging yet gorgeous trail. Unfortunately, I had to witness a couple of the 100 milers struggling to find the will to continue on. They got their asses whipped the previous night in that thunderstorm. My heart goes out to all of them, they're made of much stronger stuff than I am.

Things were not much easier for us either. Out of the 108 runners that showed up to the start, only 60 of them finished😢. I have said it before and I will say it again, just because the distance is shorter doesn't make the trail any easier to navigate.

Seeing all the volunteers from last year at the aid stations was a VERY welcome surprise:

Crooked Tree❤️
Bulldog❤️
Nemo❤️
Elk Creek❤️

HUGE thank you to the event coordinators and staff, and the volunteers Black Hills 100. See you next year, You guys are the best!

It is with great honor that the event directors were kind enough to allow me the opportunity to send off the 100. This event had such a profound effect on me, that it just felt right to do.

The weather did not hold out though. Just like last year, there was a doozy of a thunderstorm that rolled through later in the first evening. The difference is that this year it rained harder, making an already difficult trail a muddy dangerous mess.

It is with a heavy heart that I have to say that out of the 129 runners that started, only 58 finished 😢. This event is no joke, even last year I personally seen the trail snipe some of the strongest runners before sundown on the first day!

I had such a good time seeing everyone off though, looks like next year I will be doing it again😁. In the description of the video, there is a link to register for this even in 2027. I will be doing the 50k, so maybe see you there (wink wink, nudge nudge)?

What a weekend! Got the opportunity to send off some of the most gnarly people around. Got to be completely immersed in some of the most gorgeous landscapes there is. And I think most importantly, got to continue this journey that I have no words for. Just never thought I’d be here, doing this stuff.

Today is exactly the 2 year mark of not just being sober, but being clean. What a way to mark the occasion. The first day was on the top of a mountain, and the second year at the peak of one the black hills.

This makes 2 out of 4 distances completed before I am awarded the highly coveted “Man In Balck” buffalo skull. On paper it should be getting easier because the distances are getting shorter, but there is nothing easy about this event at all.

To every exceptional soul that I had the pleasure of sharing the trail with. You earned that belt buckle, wear it like it’s going out of style!

I really do appreciate every single message and phone call of support all that day. Thank you everyone, you made the miles not hurt as bad.

Another chimichanga has been made.

Got the opportunity to run out with the awesome people attempting the 100 this morning.

That start was EPIC!

It’s going to feel really strange starting at the turnaround this time. But knowing I’ve only got to run the trail once is a relief. Still have to keep in mind this is a very tough trail, and I am a hilariously average guy. This is still going to end up being a fight from start to finish.

If there’s anything I’ve learned about myself over the last couple of years is that I will not quit. The pain of giving up is more than the pain of trying and failing.

Completing this distance here only leaves the 50k & 30k. Then I can get my buffalo skull!

Time to make this chimichanga, let’s go!

Not counting the ultras, Ironman, or the long training runs, this makes marathon number 9! To say that it is a surprise when I take the time to reflect on this journey is an understatement.

There have been many times during this journey when I wanted to stop and just give up. Not in just the context of either, this includes the journey of being alive as well. Because the fact is, I am not fast or special in any way. This is just another astonishingly average meat-suit in this event that is number 167. For some reason though, I still continue to persist.
-
During this journey I have completed every triathlon distance from super sprint to , and every running distance from 5k to 100 miles. So it is not like I have anything more to prove to myself. I may not have all the answers, but I know that I am fueled by a fire that refuses to be extinguished. Perhaps it is the past me who said I would keep going until I either found what I was looking for, or died in the process. Regardless, this is a journey of self-discovery, and every step forward is a step closer to being the me I am ok with.

As I reflect on my journey this year, there many things that come to mind. Out of those things, there are a few of them that really stood out.

All the way up to now, I have not done a good job acknowledging how far I have come or even recognizing my own successes. As a result, I tended to struggle with maintaining good mental/emotional health along with maintaining my sobriety. For the last couple of years, it has been brought to my attention how important and powerful it can be to combine acknowledgement with celebratory actions. I do these things in order to turn down the volume with many struggles that I live with.

Now though, the proof of where I came from to where I am now is undeniable, and I am going to take a few minutes to list them out as a wise woman said to.

During 2025:
* Staying true to a promise made to myself - “if i live in a town that has a marathon, do it every year”
* Carved out a place in the ultramarathon community completing the Black Hills 100 and Bohemian Alps 50k
* Established my own LLC - TBI Endurance Coaching
* Completed this year of credentialing for endurance sport coaching
* Made a huge step forward in my I.T. career
* Bought my own home

Years ago my mentor said to create “A” year defining moment. Looking back at this list, it appears I have managed to create many moments that have defined the year. I know I have mentioned this guy quite a few times over the years. It just proves how much of an impact he has had on me when I was desperately searching for tools to reforge my path in this life.

Note to future me:
Dude, you have come a such long way. Take your time and bask in the success at this aid station. Rest for a while, you have absolutely earned it. If no one ever says this to you, I will…I am so fu***ng proud of you man…You’ll know when it’s time to continue forging ahead, after all you are…

My packet has been picked up, and the last couple of miles have been ran. This is my last even of 2025, and let me say that this year has been impactful on a level that I was not expecting.

This is not just another half, it represents a close to a chapter in this endurance journey that deserves nothing less than a victory lap.

This is the strongest finish ever at distances beyond 10k!

Truth is that I was in 3rd for about 30k’s or so. Between my wheels falling off just after Loma, and the other runners just being stronger than I am, I ended up falling to 6th.

I barely held onto that place too! The last 5k’s or so I started to have cramping challenges with some gut challenges to go along with it.

Don’t get me wrong, I am over the moon that this was a PR performance on the course and the distance. Being able to finish on the podium would’ve been one hell of a bonus though.

This is my favorite section of the entire course. It is also coincidentally the hardest. It’s something about getting out of the tree line and going over the peak of the hill, and being hit with such a sight is some special.

It’s so still, so quiet.
