Kole made short work of deer season and got his last leg of his grand slam in stile. He couldn’t take the day off from school because he took yesterday off to get his bear. Right after school I picked him up and we went to my mothers to sit because she has been seeing deer pretty steady. We didn’t sit 5 minutes and he said , Pa, there’s a buck. Sure enough off behind me and to my right a buck was coming in. We had to watch it for a good ten minutes and finally between us moving and the deer getting closer he was able to make a great shot. He has had a season that will be hard to beat. Starting in the spring with 2 nice Tom’s, then a 52 inch moose, then a 220 lb bear yesterday and a 150 lb five pointer to top it off today. Congratulations Kole on a job well done.

Well I was getting nervous that we wasn’t going to be able to make it happen this late in the year but we were able to get one last bear for my grandson Kole’s grand slam this year. Him and his mother went and set up his own bait early in the year because he wanted to trap one. The bears didn’t cooperate with him so I told him that I would try to squeeze him in later in the season when I had my clients finished up. We only had this week because my wife has a moose permit next week. I only had one bait still getting hit so it was do or die and he did it. The big dry sow tried as hard as she could to slip them but the hounds weren’t having it. She treed 250 yds from the road and that’s all she wrote for this bear season. It was a good year with only one hound hunter going home without his bear. That keeps us motivated to do even better next year. Happy Hunting.

Well , after trying a couple times to get this young fella a bear for his grand slam and not getting a run things finally fell together today. A nice bear hit a bait that hadn’t been hit in awhile and we were able to capitalize on it. He was only there for ten minutes but that was all it took. Moe started it and Hunter put in Echo and Jolene and they cold trailed a couple miles and finally got it jumped. They ran hard for 5 or 6 miles and then started pretty much walking it. They went a total of 14 miles which is a long run for this time of year. He crossed a lot of roads so we were able to pick up dogs that were behind and put in fresh dogs to finally bring the hunt to an end. The young fella did a heck of a good job and hit the bear just right as he was trying to cross the road. Now all he needs is a deer to finish his second grand slam. Quite a feat for a 12 year old.

Ron was finally able to end his bear season with one in the trap. After playing cat and mouse he was finally able too out smart him and get a cable on him. Congratulations Ron, way to stick it out.

Another awesome day in the woods today. We could have done without the wind. It made getting dogs into the run difficult but we persevered and over came. Moe got the track started and I was able to get Jake in with him. They got it rolling pretty good and Hunter was able to get Jolene and Tripp in. They walked the nice boar awhile and were finally able to tree it. By the way they were treeing we could tell that the bear was low in the tree. We were just able to get to them before the bear bailed on us. He was only about ten feet off the ground so as soon as we saw him he jumped out and the race was on again. They walked and bayed him for awhile before we could get in front of him on a trail . Frank made a great shot at close range to finally end the chase. A couple dogs had some holes but nothing too bad. They’ll be ready to go again next week.

We had a tuff week last week but Hunter got us straightened right out this week. He started off a bait that the camera wasn’t working on with Echo, Oakley and Ashe. They cold trailed out about a mile or so before they got it jumped. Then after a bit he got Jazz and Jolene turned in and the race was on. They tuned him around the mountains about 8 miles and came up treed. It was 900 yds from the road. Thank goodness Hunter had Mountain man Tom with him because a lesser man would never have made it. lol They got to the tree but as Hunter was getting the dogs tied back the bear came down. He tore out through the woods with hounds hanging off him and didn’t make it to far before he decided to go in a hole. Mountain man Tom and Hunter made it to the hole and were able to end the chase with Tom’s biggest bear to date. I would also like to thank Ron C for making a guest appearance and helping us get it off the mountain. lol

09/25/2026

What a contrast between last week and this week. Last week we couldn’t do anything wrong and this week we couldn’t do much right but today we got back on track. Hunter had a fresh track this morning, Echo and Jazz got it rolling quick and he cut in Jolene, Oakley and Ashe. They smoked it for about 3 or 4 miles and came up treed. His hunter made a nice shot to harvest his second bear with us in 2 years. A nice white V was a bonus. I had a 7 hr old track that Moe and Bell had no problem taking out. I quickly cut in Ace and his sister Blue, they cold trailed out about a mile and made the jump and the race was on. They screamed it for about 7 miles before the bear had enough and decided to tree. It was one of those weeks that we had to work for every thing we got but we kept working and ended up tagging out in the end. I would like to thank the hunters for hanging in there with us. Great work guys.

Hunter got us started off this week with a nice bear in a hole. Jazz, Jolene, Echo and Trip were the stars today. After a grueling 12 mile run on a rugged mtn , they were able to bring him to bay in a ten foot crevice in the granite. The hunter had to be patient and he was able to make a great shot to end the hunt with his first bear.

We finally got the chance to take our second youth contest winner out this morning and he sure did make the wait worth it. Hunter turned Echo out on the older track and she started opening and picking her way out. Hunter then turned Jolene , Ash,and Trip in and I sent Hank and Jake in. They picked their way up onto the mountain and then we heard them jump it. It ran across the mountain about 6 hundred yards and treed. We were a little skeptical walking in because it happened so quick but they sounded good. We made it into the tree and there sat the biggest bear of the season so far, 294 lbs. the boy made a great shot to end the hunt. Congratulations Hunter ( the boys name also) on a job well done.

Great morning in the bear woods, we started with Moe, Blue, Jolene and Echo. It was a little ruff getting it started because there were a bunch of c***s on the bait but Moe finally got it rolling and the other 3 took off after him. They ran about a half hour through a bunch of feeder tracks were the bear had fed in the oak and beech but finally came up treed. The big dry sow didn’t like the first tree and decided to bail before Ron could get a shot. We cut the hounds loose again and they screamed it about ten minutes and treed it again. This time Ron was able to get off a good shot and the rest is history. This was Ron Mike’s 20th bear with us at SMGS, and here’s to many more. I would like to send a huge thank you to Courtney Ellis for the help, he’s always ready to lend a helping hand. We appreciate it.
