HIGH FIVES, HUGS, and HANDSHAKES !!!! ZONE 6 BULL DOWN !!!!
Our hunters on this adventure were Bob and his close friend John, both experienced sportsmen with multiple successful hunts under their belts. Early on, Bob made it very clear that he wanted to experience a Maine bull Moose up close. After many more conversations discussing desires, goals, and expectations, the preparations for this adventure began.
Monday started off with high hopes and boots on the ground. After cow calling in selected areas and walking through rugged terrain for most of the day, we managed to call in a small bull at the end of the day. Bob decided to pass on this young bull with hopes for a larger bull. Heads held high, we headed back to camp and started to plan out our strategy for the following day.
Tuesday morning was calm with the unmistakable smell of autumn. With strategically placed scent rags, and decoy in place, the silence in the air was gently interrupted by our soft cow calls that drifted deep into the timber. After a bit of time, we started to hear the steady repetitive cadence of a bull's grunts answering our calls. Minutes later the bull would come into view 200 yards away, at the back of the marsh, near the dark timber line. When he stopped, he was staring straight at our decoy. At this point Bob whispered quietly and asked if I could call the bull in closer so that he could experience a bull at close range, to which I replied that I would do my best. At that very moment the bull stopped grunting and turned, moving further away from us and disappearing into the dense dark timber. I immediately checked the wind direction again to find that it was still in our favor. I thought the bull had either aborted the mission or was going to circle our position to get the wind in his favor. I instantly moved 50 yards away from Bob and John, positioning them between where I believed the bull to be and myself. I started to cow call softly again, hoping to encourage the bull to commit and emerge again from the timber beyond the marsh in front of us. After about two minutes the bull began to grunt again, now even closer than before. The strategy was working, so I crouched low and started moving back towards Bob and John. I got there just in time to see the bull emerge from the cover of the timber along the edge of the marsh. The bull was now at 40 yards away and instantly Bob fired one shot with his 30-06 sealing the deal at 7:58 a.m.. High fives, hugs, and handshakes were shared by all. An epic hunt and adventure, with awesome people, in the great state of Maine.
I would like to thank Bob and John for allowing us to share our passion for moose and moose hunting, and for being awesome hunters, who we consider to be part of our family now. A big thank you to my camp crew for everything you do to help make every hunt enjoyable and successful. Early mornings and late nights with great food, and laughs. ( Judy, Joanne, Hunter, and Linda ). Also, I would like to thank the extraction crew for all their help retrieving this majestic animal from the woods ( Hunter, Carrie, Bob, and John ).
The sound of a bull moose is my favorite sound in the world. MOOSE HUNTING IS THE BEST!!!!
