Youth sports can be a lot.

There are politics, egos, opinions, disagreements and plenty of other adult stuff that can sometimes make something that’s supposed to be about kids way more complicated than it ever needs to be.

But days like yesterday are a great reminder of what youth sports can be when the focus stays where it belongs.

A group of kids on a baseball field, surrounded by families who put the kids first, starting to understand what all the work is actually for.

They’re not just having fun because they’re playing baseball. They’re learning how much fun it is to earn something together.

They’re starting to feel the reward of showing up, putting in the work, being coached, picking each other up, competing, failing, adjusting and trying again. Eventually they look around and realize that all that work is starting to pay off.

And that feeling becomes contagious.

The reward for this group yesterday was scoring 42 runs in three games while only giving up 20. As a team, they collected 40 hits, 11 doubles and 5 home runs — with 4 of those coming from the same hitter. Every kid who took the mound showed up and threw strikes. They held their opponents to 20 hits while striking out 15.

But maybe the biggest reward was realizing that the hills, sprints, burpees and planks are all for a reason. When it’s game three on a hot August day, other teams are starting to melt, and these kids still feel good and are ready to compete, suddenly all that work makes sense.

And none of that means winning or statistics are the only things that matter.

The real reward is watching kids figure out the connection between preparation and results. Work hard and something good happens. Work hard together and something even better can happen. Then they want to come back and do it again.

That’s when “having fun” in youth sports starts to mean something different.

It becomes fun to compete.
Fun to improve.
Fun to be counted on.
Fun to watch a teammate succeed.
Fun to accomplish something together that wasn’t possible without the work that came before it.

That’s what yesterday was about.

A group of kids getting a chance to see what their work can become, with coaches and families there to support them and keep the focus where it belongs.

On the kids.

Here we go! We’re looking to get back on a roll. This bats have come alive and were looking to keep them hot in the Hersey Pa. Let’s ride that sugar high.
