With 21 games left in the season, and a 70-71 record, I feel like the Cardinals would have to go something like 16-5 over their last 21 to have a shot at the WC. That would make them 86 and 76, and 10 over .500. If Arizona maintains their record (7 over .500) the Cardinals would have to finish 8 over .500 (AZ owns the tiebreaker) by going 15-6 to get to 85 and 77.

It's all a pipe dream, but when there's a sliver of hope, that's what we have to hang onto. 2026 was never about making the playoffs, however it's crazy to think if a few games had very conceivably gone different they could honestly be more in the running. EVERY team has a handful of games that they look back upon and can't believe they didn't come out on top though.

The Cardinals learned a lot about guys this year, yet they still have so many questions. ELEVEN guys made their MLB debut for the Cardinals, and I'd say most of them are guys they expect to contribute moving forward. Third base seems to be open for discussion (Jesus Baez anyone), SS is great defensively, but if you're counting on offense from that position, which STL needs, Masyn Winn hasn't answered the bell. Walker & Baez should be in the corners, but who plays CF? Church, Periera, & Scott II don't exactly seem like guys who you'd want to give 500 AB's to. Losing Dobbins for next year hurts their rotation depth, but Leahy, Pallante, McGreevy, and Matthews seem to be in a good spot to start. The bullpen has young pieces, but needs a complete overhaul - not exactly something EVERYONE in baseball doesn't know.

Playoff baseball is truly special, and the Cardinals (barring a scorching hot finish) will miss for a 4th consecutive season. I long for the days of being a perennial contender, but know that the organization seems pointed in a direction to take that on. 2000 - 2015 was an absolute blast, with a few fun years to follow, but the calendar tells me that was quite awhile ago, even if it doesn't feel like that.

Enjoy the last handful of weeks, because even average Cardinals baseball, is better than no Cardinals baseball.
