We get asked a lot β€” why do you keep expanding into small towns?

For us, the answer has always been the same. Because small towns deserve it. πŸ’ͺ

We started in Redwood Falls in 2011. Added a 24hr facility in 2019. Then came Springfield in 2021. Sleepy Eye in September 2025. And most recently opened our doors in Ga***rd in December 2025.

Every single community we've entered has shown us the same thing β€” people who want access to a real gym space, programming without the cost of a coach and a welcoming environment. People who are tired of driving 45+ minutes to find a gym that actually has what they need.

We wanted to change that.

Functional Fitness Springfield isn't just a place to work out. It's a one-stop wellness experience you'd expect to find in a major city β€” right here in rural Minnesota:

πŸ’ͺ Strength training guidance & premium programming - without the cost of a personal trainer
🧘 Infrared sauna
πŸ’§ Water massage table
πŸ’š Tanning
⏰ 24hr access β€” on your schedule, not ours

And being part of a community means more than just opening a gym. We're always open to fundraising opportunities β€” whether that's donating memberships, running campaigns or finding new ways to support the people and causes that matter in your community.

If you know of a cause or organization in Springfield we should support β€” reach out. We genuinely mean it. 🧑

Small towns deserves this. And we're so proud to be here.

Getting out for a walk every day is a great start. But if you're strolling, you might be leaving the biggest benefit on the table.

A new study followed nearly 80,000 adults for 16+ years and compared slow walkers (3+ hours a day) against brisk walkers (just 15 minutes a day).

Slow walking 3+ hours a day? Basically no mortality benefit.

Brisk walking 15 minutes a day? Death risk dropped nearly 20%.

That's not a typo. The slow strollers got almost nothing. The brisk walkers β€” fifteen minutes β€” bought themselves years.

Here's why: slow walking doesn't load your heart or aerobic system enough to drive real adaptation. It feels productive. It pads your step count. But your cardiovascular system shrugs.

Brisk walking β€” the pace where you'd struggle to sing the chorus of a song β€” actually pushes your heart, lungs, and muscles enough to matter.

This week's challenge:
Pick one 15-minute walk every day. Walk it like you're 5 minutes late. That's it.

Forget chasing 10,000 steps if you're collecting them at a stroll. Trade 3,000 of those for 15 minutes of actually pushing the pace β€” and the math gets a whole lot better.

Intensity matters more than duration. It's one of the principles we build every program around at Functional Fitness β€” whether you're training with a coach or showing up on your own.

Here's something Trevor noticed early in his coaching career that he couldn't stop thinking about β€” and eventually couldn't ignore.

Walk into almost any gym in 2011 and you'd see the same thing. The cardio equipment was packed. The weight room? Intimidating, unfamiliar and maybe even a little unwelcoming β€” especially if you didn't grow up there.

And it made complete sense. Most people didn't know what to do with a kettlebell or a barbell. They didn't want to get hurt. They didn't want to look silly. Nobody had shown them that strength training didn't have to be scary β€” or that it might actually change their life.

So we built a gym specifically for those people... the ones who didn't feel like the gym was for them. The ones defaulting to the treadmill not because they loved it, but because it was the only thing that felt safe.

Functional Fitness was created to change that, to empower people & to invite more people into fitness.

Fast forward to today β€” and something really exciting is happening across the fitness world. More and more people are grabbing weights over cardio. The research has caught up. The conversation has shifted. Strength training is finally getting the recognition it has always deserved.

We'd like to think we played a small part in that β€” at least for the members who've walked through our doors over the past 14 years. πŸ˜„

Trevor saw this coming in 2011. He built something for the people the fitness industry was leaving behind β€” and the world is finally catching up.

And when it came time to name it? He was adamant β€” his name would not be on the door. No "Trevor's Gym." No "Wittwer Fitness." Nothing that made it about him -- he's probably even mad his name is mentioned so much in this post.... but thankfully, Erin runs the social media 😜

Functional Fitness was never meant to be about him. It was about the person walking through that door for the first time, a little unsure, and just looking for a place that felt like it was made for them.

That decision set the tone for everything that came after. 🧑

A new study just put to rest something fitness influencers have been quietly selling for years.

You cannot whey-protein your way out of a tendon injury, a sore knee, or weak bones.

Here's what researchers actually did: 24 older adults heading into knee surgery. A safe tracer that lights up newly built tissue inside the body. Half ate normally. Half added 40 grams of whey protein daily for two weeks.

The result?

β†’ Muscle rebuilds at ~1.2% per day β€” full turnover in about 3 months
β†’ Tendons, cartilage, and menisci rebuild at 0.18–0.21% per day β€” full turnover takes 1.3 to 1.5 years
β†’ Bone rebuilds at 0.12–0.21% per day β€” up to 2.3 years for a complete cycle

Two weeks of extra whey moved exactly none of those clocks.

Here's the reframe: your body isn't one dial. It's many clocks, each running at a completely different speed. Muscle responds to protein on a daily timescale. Everything else responds to mechanical load and time β€” measured in months and years.

This isn't an argument against protein. Protein matters. It's an argument against expecting it to do work it simply cannot do.

Sore tendon? Progressive loading.
Bone density concerns? Heavy resistance training.
Rehab timeline? Time and patient progression.

The biology runs on its own clock. Our job β€” and yours β€” is to respect it and give your body exactly what each tissue actually needs.

This is the kind of thinking we want every member to carry into their training at Functional Fitness. Not just working hard β€” working smart. Giving your body exactly what each tissue actually needs, on the timeline it actually runs on.

Not sure where to start? That's where our Premium memberships come into play! Not only do you get access to our wellness perks & multi-location access, you also get a training program delivered right to your phone. Track your progress & get new programming weekly!

πŸ‘‹ Hey Springfield β€” it's time you got to know the faces behind Functional Fitness!

We're Trevor & Erin Wittwer β€” small town Minnesotans, former college athletes, business owners and parents of two boys who keep us humble (& active) every single day. πŸ˜„

When Functional Fitness was born in 2011, Trevor made one thing clear β€” his name would not be on the door. Not because he wasn't proud of what he was building, but because it was never about him. It was about the people walking through that door.

That philosophy has shaped everything about how we've built this business β€” from the way we hire coaches, to the way we serve members, to the communities we choose to show up in.

Over the next few weeks we're going to share more about who we are, why we started Functional Fitness, what we're building in your community and the causes that are close to our hearts.

We may not always be in Springfield in person, but we are always just a call, text or DM away β€” and we love hearing from the people we get to serve & we're available to help make everything go smoothly from day one. 🧑

A new study just came out and we need to talk about it β€” especially if you spend most of your day at a desk.

86 office workers. 12 weeks. No extra gym time. No diet changes.

Half of them kept sitting like normal. The other half stood up at the top of every hour and did just 3 minutes of movement β€” air squats, marching in place, a lap around the office, calf raises at their desk.

After 12 weeks, the results weren't subtle:
↓ Fasting blood sugar
↓ Insulin resistance
↓ Waist circumference (2cm)
↓ Blood pressure (nearly 4 points)
↑ Energy and productivity

Total extra activity? About 21 minutes a day β€” spread across 7 small breaks.

Here's the part that matters: your hour at the gym is not cancelling out 8 hours of sitting. Your body doesn't just need more movement. It needs movement spread throughout the day.

We're calling it the 7Γ—3 rule.
πŸ‘‰ Seven micro-breaks.
πŸ‘‰ Three minutes each.
πŸ‘‰ Top of every hour, 9 to 5.

Set an alarm. Stand up. Move for 3 minutes. Sit back down.

That's it. Compounded over a year, this might be the most efficient health habit you're not doing.

Your gym sessions are building your foundation.
This keeps the engine running between them.

Who's adding this to their work day routine?!
