Happy Heavenly Big Blue Birthday to Simpsonville, Kentucky's, Mike Casey.
Mike was Mr. Basketball for the State of Kentucky in 1966, and he led Shelby County High School to the State Championship.
In his three years of playing varsity basketball at the University of Kentucky (1967-71), he was First Team All-SEC every year. As a sophomore, he was UK's leading scorer, and led the team in field goal percentage, as well as free-throw percentage. He also went on to make the All-NCAA Regional Team that year (1967-68). Before his senior year, he was forced to sit out, after suffering a broken leg in a car accident. He returned (1970-71) and still managed to put up 460 points that year.
In Mike's three years (remember UK (freshman weren't allowed to play), he amassed an amazing 1,535 points, making him the 13th all-time scorer in Kentucky history. Mr. Casey also grabbed 558 rebounds and had 260 assists.
Wildcat great, and all-time leading scorer in UK history Dan Issel went on to say, "Mike Casey was one of the best players that ever played at UK. I don't think he gets the credit that he deserves."
In 2009, Mr. Casey was inducted into the State of Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame, as well as the University of Kentucky Athletic Hall of Fame, in 2010.
