The drum solo is the climax of any belly dancer show. This is a great time for the dancer and drummer to improvise and communicate. In this workshop, you will learn how to build your own solos and use techniques for improvisation. You will also learn what the dancer is expecting from you and how to play something interesting and exciting for them. This workshop is perfect for drummers who know the basics. Mosaic Dance Festival Music Workshop spotlight 🎶 Exploring Arabic and Turkish musical scales (Maqaamat) with Jesse Manno from Sherefe 🎶

-Open to all, no instrument or talent required-

European and American music divides an octave into 12 precisely equidistant tones, creating all its music from combinations of those notes. As brilliant and soul-shaking as this music can be, it essentially uses only primary colors to make its paintings with. Music from around the Fertile Crescent is much more subtle, using up to 3 times as many notes per octave. In this workshop, we will explore these microtonal colors, why they have thrived despite heavy Western influence, and how they affect our body and spirit. A keen musical ear will enhance the experience, but anyone can appreciate the cultural and theoretical aspects of these ancient scales.

Sunday, October 11, 2026
10:00 AM - 11:30 AM
@ Pomegranate Studios

About Jesse:
Jesse Manno was born into a performing arts family in New York City and raised there and in Colorado, immersed early in music and dance. A vocalist and multi-instrumentalist playing laptop, lutes, flutes, keyboard, and percussion, he has served as Music Director of the CU Boulder Dance Program since 1991 and composer-in-residence at Bates Dance Festival since 1998. He's co-created hundreds of dance, theater, and film projects with collaborators like David Dorfman and Chris Aiken, performed from BAM to all 50 states and abroad, and performs Balkan and Middle Eastern music with SHEREFE.
