Patrick’s journey with AVAC started in 1984, fresh out of San Jose State, when he joined the club as a fitness instructor.

After a year and a half on staff, he became a member—and more than 40 years later, he’s still working out here! 💪

AVAC became part of more than just Patrick’s fitness routine. He introduced his father, Frank, to the club in 1984, and Frank stayed active here for decades, working out consistently until he passed at 91 years old.

From Patrick’s original AVAC ID card in the 1980s to photos taken more than 40 years later, his story is a reminder that healthy habits can last a lifetime.

Then vs. now 👀💙 Which AVAC class brings back memories for you?

For 50 years, AVAC has continued to grow with our community. Some things have changed (hello, Bungee Fit 👋), while others have stood the test of time (tennisheads, we see you).

Today, members can explore everything from Pilates, yoga, cycling, and tennis to newer favorites like Zumba, Dance Fusion, Barre, AbFit, and more.

Why do 7,500+ members choose AVAC and AVAC swim school? 👀 Because it’s more than a gym.

🏊‍♀️ Kids build confidence and learn a lifelong skill in our pools.
🎾 Friendly pickleball and tennis matches turn into friendships.
🥤 Group fitness buddies become post-class smoothie friends.

As AVAC celebrates 50 years, it remains a place where people come to move, connect, and belong.

How has AVAC changed over the years?

Founder Joe Shank reflects on how the club has continued to evolve alongside the community, from the days of step aerobics to today’s growing pickleball scene.

Some of the club’s biggest changes came directly from member feedback, including the Outdoor Fitness Center. What started as a temporary solution during COVID became a permanent part of AVAC, now upgraded with BeaverFit equipment, a turf track, raised rubber flooring, and solar panels.

For 50 years, AVAC has continued to grow with the community. 💙💪
