SoulShine Studios RVA

SoulShine Studios RVA Here’s the thing—movement isn’t just about exercise; it’s about feeling alive. MOVE FOR YOU: Move in ways that feel good, free, and true to you.

This isn’t about how it looks—it’s about how it feels. This is your playground, not your stage!

W**e, chocolate, music, movement, and permission to be a little audacious? Sounds like a Friday night to us.

Join GeGe for Sensuous Dance on Friday, September 11. We’ll start with a w**e + chocolate happy half-hour, then turn up the music and spend an hour exploring sensuous movement and some deliciously fun choreography.

No dance experience is needed.

Wear something that makes you feel good in your body. Flowing, sassy, revealing, sparkly, whatever feels like you. This is a chance to play around with movement, attitude, and the parts of yourself that maybe don’t get much time on the dance floor.

And yes, bring a long scarf, boa, or anything that can become a boa. We are giving you permission to be dramatic about it.

Come for the chocolate. Stay for the dancing. Leave feeling like you remembered something fun about yourself.

Grab your spot and bring a friend who knows how to have a good time.

Oof.

Would she see you dancing in the kitchen? Making things? Getting dirty? Snort laughing? Going somewhere you've never been?

Or would she be like, “Mare. You seem to spend an awful lot of time answering emails.”

Fair point, little Mare.

What would YOUR 10-year-old tell you to go do?

One of my favorite things about getting older is caring a whole lot less about looking like I know what I'm doing. Give me a new dance. The weird craft. The class where everyone else seems to know what's happening.

I might be terrible; I also might love it.

If the answer is “I can't remember,” we may need to talk.

There is quite a bit of laughing around here. Occasionally because something is genuinely funny. Occasionally because we have absolutely no idea what our arms are doing.

Both count.

Movement can feel good AND be fun. Wild concept, I know.

And just like that, August is almost in the rearview mirror.

We’ve had first classes, welcome-backs, sweaty dances, deep breaths, big wins (BEST BOUTIQUE FITNESS STUDIO and BEST ADULT DANCE FOR ADULTS) and a few “Wait…I can actually DO that?” surprises around here this month.

Some of you tried something new. Some came back to something you’d been missing. Some made a new friend, took a break when you needed one, or finally stopped thinking quite so much about what you looked like and just MOVED.

That’s the stuff I notice. It’s been 7 years of SoulShine and it still makes me ridiculously happy.

SoulShine has never been about everyone doing the same thing. Thank goodness, because that would be incredibly boring. Dance your heart out. Get quiet on your mat. Lift something heavy. Try Qi Gong. Pick up a hoop. Wander into S.O.U.L.Shine and see what the heck happens.

Thank you for spending part of your August with us.

Now tell me…what’s one SoulShine moment from this month that you want to keep?

We hear a surprising amount of apologizing at SoulShine (and way too much in general…especially from women).

“Sorry, I need a break.”
“Sorry, I’m not very flexible.”
“Sorry, I can’t keep up.”
“Sorry, I can’t dance.”

Can we please stop being sorry for having bodies?

Take the break. Bend your knees. Lose the beat. Get completely confused about which direction everyone is going and laugh about it. Ask the question. Try again. Or don’t.

Nobody is grading you.

And that person next to you who looks like they have it ALL figured out? They may have been scared to death walking into their first class. They’ve probably gotten lost, wobbled, modified, rested and wondered what the heck everyone else was doing too.

We’re humans moving in a room together. It’s wonderfully imperfect.

So I’m curious: have you ever caught yourself apologizing in a class for something that really didn’t require an apology?

Come sing with us.

On Wednesday, September 2, Raffy is bringing us an evening of mantras, stories, music, and Kirtan, the beautiful practice of call-and-response chanting.

Join in when you feel like it, listen when you’d rather listen, and let yourself settle into the rhythm of the room.

Raffy has a way of making these gatherings feel warm, welcoming, and easy to step into. We’ll share songs and stories from the Bhakti Yoga tradition, settle into the rhythm of chanting, and make some space to simply be together.

There’s something pretty special about singing in a room full of people. You start with your own voice, then suddenly you’re part of something much bigger than yourself.

All are welcome, whether Kirtan is completely new to you or already part of your practice.

Love offerings are accepted to support The Butterfly Fund, a community-supported initiative that helps make SoulShine classes accessible to those who need them.

Please register to save your space.

Come sing, listen, laugh, and share an evening with us. 💛

Some of the best things that happen when you start moving more have absolutely nothing to do with what you see in the mirror.

You sleep better. Take a deeper breath without even thinking about it. Realize your shoulders have been hanging out somewhere near your ears all day. You start to recognize the difference between “I’m tired” and “I am DONE.”

And you begin to notice which kinds of movement give you what you need. Dancing makes you laugh. Yoga settles you down. Qi Gong gets you quiet. Strength reminds you what your body can DO.

Movement can be a conversation.

The more you move, the more you start picking up on the signals your body has probably been sending you all along. And when you actually hear them, you can respond.

That relationship with your body feels a whole lot more interesting to me than chasing whatever we’re supposedly trying to “fix” in the mirror.

What have you noticed about YOUR body since you started moving more?

Leave a comment and share your experience with us.

What happens when we let the body have a voice?

Body Temple Dance is a trauma-informed, spiritual and somatic movement practice created for all bodies. You don’t need dance experience, a certain level of flexibility, or any idea what you’re supposed to do.

The practice draws from yogic philosophy, ta**ra, movement therapy, and good old-fashioned dance. There’s room to feel, move, pause, shake it out, get curious, and connect with the people around you.

Our bodies hold a lot. Some days that look like joy and play. Other days, its tension, emotion, or something we can’t quite put into words. Body Temple Dance gives us space to feel it, move with it, and remember that we don’t have to leave any part of ourselves at the door.

Come as you are. Wear something you can move comfortably in and give yourself permission to be curious about what your body wants to do.
