When did you last look through the supplies in your car?

November is a practical time to take ten minutes and check the kit you already own: Does the flashlight work? Is there a blanket or appropriate extra clothing? Is first aid stocked and are dated items still usable? Do you have water for your route and conditions? Does your phone charger work? Can you quickly find the scraper, jumper cables, and other supplies you may need?

There is no need to replace everything at once. Restock what you used and address the gaps you actually find. Before longer drives, check tires, vehicle condition, route, and forecast too.

Here's something that really doesn't belong in the woods: the trash left behind after a camping trip. Candy wrappers, snack bags, bottle caps, food scraps—and the odd piece of gear nobody remembers packing.

Could someone in your household find the right phone number if your phone wasn’t available?

Most of us save contacts on our phones. A small written card gives the household a backup they can carry.

Screenshot this free blank card and fill it in with your phone’s Markup tool, or print it and write by hand. It has space for:

• The cardholder’s name
• A trusted local contact and phone number
• An out-of-area contact and phone number
• A meeting place near home and another outside your neighborhood
• An optional important number and the date the card was updated

Make one for each household member. Keep completed cards private, carry a paper copy in a wallet or another appropriate holder, and talk through the meeting plan together.

One of the smartest camping gear upgrades starts with taking care of what you already own.

Before buying more gear, spend 15 minutes starting this post-trip check:

🏕️ Dry your tent completely. Shake out dirt and let both fabric and floor dry before packing.

🎒 Empty your backpack. Check every pocket for crumbs and dirt, clean according to the care label and let it dry fully.

🛏️ Store your sleeping bag properly. Keep it dry and loosely stored in a roomy, breathable bag in a cool, dry indoor place, following its care instructions.
