William Harris reached out to us because he needed a weekday class. His work schedule made it difficult for him to attend one of our regularly scheduled Saturday classes, so he asked if we could work with him on another day.
He then talked to his wife Cierra, his brother-in-law Christopher, and Christopher's friend/coworker Colton.
They decided to take the class together.
We announced the class publicly, and Jonathan Rogers joined them.
So yesterday, Wednesday, August 12th, we welcomed five new students into our classroom:
William Harris
Cierra Harris
Christopher Mullen
Colton Threatt
Jonathan Rogers
And as the day unfolded, we were reminded once again that
At the beginning of class, we asked everyone why they wanted to take the class.
The easy answer would have been "Because I want my concealed carry permit."
But we wanted to know what was behind that decision.
William and Cierra recently welcomed their second child.
Christopher is a father.
Colton's wife is pregnant and is expecting to give birth in the coming months. She was actually registered for yesterday's class as well, but unfortunately woke up not feeling well and decided it was best to stay home. We hope she has a smooth and healthy pregnancy, and we're looking forward to getting her in for training whenever she's feeling up to it.
Jonathan is also a father, although his child is now an adult.
For William, Cierra, Christopher, and Colton, a big part of the motivation was the same:
They wanted proper training so they could be better prepared to protect their families if the need ever arose.
Jonathan's primary goal was to obtain his permit so he could legally carry concealed.
William also told us something that we thought was especially meaningful.
He considers himself a "gun guy," but one of the reasons he specifically sought us out was because he wanted Cierra to become comfortable around fi****ms.
Cierra had
William had spent some time researching us and reading through our reviews. He liked seeing how many previous students described our training as beginner-friendly.
He wanted his wife to have a good introduction to fi****ms without feeling overwhelmed.
That was exactly the kind of student we were happy to have in class.
Before we got too far into the day, we explained the two examinations that are part of the concealed carry class: the written test and the live-fire qualification.
We also asked if anyone was nervous about the shooting qualification.
Christopher admitted that he might be a little rusty.
Cierra had no fi****ms experience whatsoever.
We reassured everyone that they didn't need to walk into the classroom already knowing everything.
We would teach them.
We would answer their questions.
And before we went to the range, we would work with each of them individually to help prepare them for the qualification.
Then we got to work.
Throughout the day, we covered the required material, and we also spent a considerable amount of time discussing the legal side of carrying a firearm and using force in self-defense.
North Carolina requires a minimum of 2 hours of legal instruction as part of the concealed carry course...we typically spend around five hours on it.
That's because we don't want students simply memorizing laws from a textbook.
We want them to understand what those laws actually mean.
So we worked through SEVERAL real-world "what if?" scenarios.
What would you do?
Why?
Would that use of force be legally justified?
What happens afterward?
What would investigators look at?
What could change the legal outcome?
The students participated, asked questions, and worked through the scenarios with us.
And eventually, it was time for the written test.
When the tests were handed back, we had:
๐ฏ 3 students โ 100/100
๐ฏ 1 student โ 95/100
๐ฏ 1 student โ 90/100
That gave yesterday's class an average score of:
We were proud of the group.
But we weren't done yet.
As we got closer to the end of the day, we moved into marksmanship training.
Before heading outside, we used our laser training simulator to work with each student individually.
This gave us an opportunity to see what each person was doing, identify problems, and work on correcting them before they ever fired a live round for the qualification.
For some students, those corrections were minor.
For others, there was more to work on.
That's one of the reasons we like using the simulator as part of our training โ it gives us another opportunity to work with students before putting them on the range.
Then we stepped outside.
It was time for the live-fire qualification.
And this is where we got to see the work from earlier in the day come together.
Cierra had never fired a firearm before taking this class.
Christopher had told us he was rusty.
Both successfully completed the qualification.
William shot exceptionally well.
And Colton? He absolutely crushed it.
His qualification target was arguably one of the best we've ever seen from a concealed carry student โ and if it wasn't the best, it was certainly in the top few.
Cierra, Christopher, and Jonathan also passed, although we identified some areas where each of them can continue improving.
And that's okay.
In fact, it's one of the reasons we offer marksmanship training.
All three have already told us they plan to come back for additional marksmanship training.
Once the qualification was complete, we went back inside and issued certificates to everyone.
We also talked with each student about the areas they could continue working on.
Then came one of our favorite parts of the day.
We asked everyone what they thought about the class.
What did they learn?
What surprised them?
What would stick with them?
The answer we heard repeatedly was the interactive, scenario-based training.
Cierra told us that she really didn't know what to expect when she arrived, but she was blown away by how much she learned about fi****ms, safety, and the legal side of self-defense.
Christopher told us he appreciated how we took complicated legal topics and explained them in plain English.
And William and Colton gave us a pretty funny comparison.
Both had taken hunter safety courses elsewhere and expected this class to be dry and boring.
William told us he had struggled to stay awake during his hunter safety course because the material was so dull and the instructor was so monotone.
Thankfully, we managed to keep everyone awake yesterday. ๐
More importantly, the students told us they appreciated the atmosphere of the class.
They could ask questions.
They could admit when they didn't understand something.
They could participate in the scenarios.
And we could have serious conversations about complicated legal issues without making the entire day feel like a lecture.
That's exactly what we hope to accomplish.
Three of yesterday's students took the time to leave us reviews.
Jonathan wrote:
"Personable interactive instruction with real life scenarios for firearm usage & safety."
Cierra wrote:
"Coming from someone who had never touched a gun before, I left this class feeling comfortable to be able to handle a gun and the legal way to deal with situations involving self defense with guns."
And Christopher wrote:
"I never felt uncomfortable asking questions or admitting when I didnโt understand something."
Their full reviews are included in the screenshots below.
Those three reviews also brought us to a milestone:
We genuinely appreciate every person who has taken the time to leave us a review.
A review is something a student doesn't have to give you.
So when someone takes the time to write one after spending an entire day with us, we don't take it for granted.
Looking back at yesterday's class, there was something we really liked about the group.
They weren't all the same.
One student had never touched a firearm.
Another was a little rusty.
Two were already very comfortable with fi****ms.
They had different reasons for wanting to train.
And they all had different things they wanted to get out of the day.
If you're completely new to fi****ms, we'll meet you where you are.
If you've been shooting for years but know you could be better, we'll work with you on that.
If you want to obtain your North Carolina concealed carry certificate, we'll help you through the process.
And if you're not sure which type of training makes the most sense for you, just ask us.
Our goal isn't to sell you the most expensive class.

And if none of those dates work for you, remember what started yesterday's class:
Your schedule doesn't necessarily have to revolve around ours.
If you can get at least 5 people together, send us a message.
As long as we don't already have something scheduled, we'll work with your group to find a day that works.
This applies to all of our training, including concealed carry, marksmanship, and our Comprehensive Handgun Masterclass.
If you've been thinking about getting fi****ms training but haven't taken that first step yet, send us a message.
Maybe you've never touched a handgun.
Maybe you're a little rusty.
Maybe you already own fi****ms but want to become a better shooter.
Maybe you want to learn more about the legal responsibilities that come with carrying.
Or maybe you simply want to become more comfortable and knowledgeable around fi****ms.
Tell us about your experience, what you're hoping to accomplish, and what your schedule looks like.
We'll be honest with you about what we think would be the best place to start โ even if that means recommending a different class than the one you initially asked about.
And if you know someone who's been saying they need to get some fi****ms training...
