🌊 Lake Fact Friday
The salmon are coming back to Racine.
Every fall, thousands of Chinook and Coho leave Lake Michigan and swim up the Root River to the Wisconsin DNR's Root River Steelhead Facility in Lincoln Park. In recent years, the run has built through mid-to-late September, with the biggest numbers arriving in October.
Fish that spent their whole lives out in the lake turn around and come back up a river that runs through the middle of our city. The Root and Lake Michigan are not separate ecosystems. What goes in upstream ends up in the lake.
We'll post when the DNR confirms the 2026 run is underway.
