Just some morning musings about horses..

Horses are silent yet speak volumes.
Humans need to listen to their silence.

Observe. Shhh.

Only horses can teach Horsemanship.
No gadgets or complicated bits, side reins, tie downs, or surcingles needed.

Get back to basics and listen to the horse!

Shut out the noise from so-called trainers wanting your money for their nonsense.

Humans just don't understand.
The horse is simply complex.

No one is an expert.

It's the only field where there are no experts.

If anyone claims to be an expert, they are lying to you and themselves.

Horses are my life.
My whole life.
And I learn something new every.single.day.

Humans never have the whole horse. There is always a piece of the horse's heart that stays wild.

Stays longing for freedom.

Longing for the range.
Longing while you're mindlessly loungeing. They're longing.

Horses are silent yet speak volumes.

Today I learned that you just never know who notices you.
Watches you.

What you do, what you say, how you represent and present yourself.

Today, I had two unexpected visitors stop by the farm.

Two horse people who know of me and the farm, but, I hadn't heard of them.

We had a very lovely chat in the lounge and then I showed them around a bit. "L" told me that she drives by frequently and always wanted to stop in, but, never knows if anyone is here to receive her.

As we chatted, we realized that we both are familiar with several of the same folks in this industry. She also knew my landlord's former wife and daughter. As his wife used to work for her many years ago!

It just goes to show, that you just never ever know who knows who, who is watching what you post, how you conduct yourself etc..

I was very glad to make their acquaintance.

I hope they stop by to chat again soon!

I am a lesson horse.
I am a horse that isn’t as recognized as the top hunter jumpers, the best western pleasure horse, or the 1D barrel horse, I am a lesson horse. I am the backbone of the foundation to do all of those things. I am a lesson horse.

I am not loved by one person. I am loved by several people. I don’t have my person, I have my people. I am a lesson horse.

I will teach your child and yourself more than just to ride. I will bring your child out of their shell. I will teach your child about life. I will be yours and their shoulder to cry on. I am a lesson horse.

I will bring my family the joy of teaching kids. I will bring my families business growth. I am so loved by my family, even if they don’t express it everyday. My family allows others to show me love and enjoy me. I am a lesson horse.

At the end of your childs’ journey on a lesson horse, they will out grow me. They will find one that jumps higher, a horse that is show quality, a horse much faster than me. But, I will never outgrow being a lesson horse. I will be the one that loved your child and helped your child grow into the rider and person they are. I am a lesson horse.

At the end of my time as a lesson horse; I will be covered in grey hair. Each grey hair came from each hour I spent as a lesson horse. I will be in a field of green grass, I will be taken care of as I was when I was a lesson horse. I will watch your child from across the pasture love her new horse. But, I will love your child more than any horse can. I will be the backbone of the business, the family, and your child. Don’t forget about me, I am a lesson horse.

Topic: "Knowing When it's Time".

I just spent a good portion of my morning on the phone speaking with a friend and fellow horse person about their struggle, emotional, moral etc..
in deciding what is best and when they'll know "when".

I assured them that they will know. Horses always signal to us when it is time.

*They don't enjoy outside, inside, seem lethargic etc..

* They're not comfortable. No matter what treatment, NSAID, IM shot injection etc...
They're not comfortable or are comfortable for a shorter and shorter length of time.

* Herd mates start to isolate them, push them away..

* They give you "the look" the look that says, why are you not letting me just go & rest.

* They're ill or "off" more often than not.

These and a thousand other "signs" can be indications to let us know "when" but, rest assured, when "when" comes, you will know.

Horsemanship Tip:
It's NEVER the horse's fault. EVER.

There are reasons why a horse 'misbahaves' that have zero to do with 'attitude' but, what if.. Just what if..
their perceived 'misbahavior' is just their way of communicating...

* PHYSICAL PAIN (including dental & hoof care)
* INSUFFICIENT / DIET ISSUES (too much cereal grains, not enough forage, feed doesn't meet work load or general nutritional needs etc..)
* CONFUSION (with your cues or actions)
* FEAR (just being a prey animal)
* ENVIRONMENT (problem with too much stall time, outdoor issues, herd dynamic etc..)

When your horse 'acts up' ALWAYS check PHYSICAL FIRST, then work your way down the list..
EACH TIME you interact with your horse..
check YOUR ACTIONS/CUES.
if you are NOT COMMUNICATING in a way, your horse UNDERSTANDS..
then HOW can your horse DO WHAT YOU'RE ASKING?

REMEMBER: EVERY TIME you interact with your horse, You Are TEACHING them something. GOOD or BAD. But
YOU ARE TEACHING THEM...

Think about this. Understand it. Take it on board. Absorb it. Practice & Repeat.
Then STOP BLAMING YOUR HORSE!
