Why return to poses we've practiced many times before?

Because the pose may be the same, but we aren't.

Our strength, awareness, breath, focus, and relationship with difficulty can all change.

The familiar pose becomes a place to notice that change.

What are you noticing differently in your practice these days? We'd love to hear from you.

09/02/2026

We may come to a pose with one intention and discover something else entirely.

You might begin noticing the legs, then become aware of your breath, your balance, or even how your mind responds to difficulty.

The pose may be familiar. What we notice can change.

That's one of the gifts of a consistent practice.

The Eight Petals of Yoga: Petal Two - Niyama

If the first petal of yoga, Yama, helps guide how we relate to the world around us, Niyama invites us to turn our attention inward.

Niyama encourages us to cultivate habits that support growth, awareness, and self-discipline. In yoga, this isn't about striving for perfection - it's about returning to practice with patience, curiosity, and consistency.

Sometimes the most meaningful progress comes from small, steady actions: taking a mindful breath, observing without judgment, or making time for practice even on busy days.

These simple acts help build a foundation that supports us both on and off the mat.

Inspired by the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar in Light on Life.

Your body has something to teach you.

It’s Teacher’s Choice Week at IYS.

There’s no single theme this week. Each teacher is bringing something from their own practice to explore - a pose, a question, or something they’ve been studying.

B.K.S. Iyengar described the body as his “first instrument” for understanding yoga.

That gives us an interesting way to approach our own practice: instead of always trying to achieve a particular result, we can pay attention to what is actually happening.

A familiar pose may feel different. Something you've been avoiding may make more sense. You may simply notice something you hadn't noticed before.

Come to class this week with a little curiosity.

What has your practice been showing you lately?

Try something new this September. We are trialing three new classes, and you decide which ones stay.

Mondays 12:15 pm, Ropes
Tuesdays 12:15 pm, Yoga for a Healthy Back
Tuesdays 6:00 pm, Ropes
Tuesdays 7:30 pm, Yoga for a Healthy Back
Fridays 12:00 pm, Foundations

Ropes uses our great rope wall to create traction and support, which lets the spine open in ways that are hard to find on your own.

Yoga for a Healthy Back is for anyone looking to care for their back, and no experience is necessary. You will work through basic postures designed to elongate, extend, strengthen, and release the muscles along the spine, with modifications offered throughout to ease pain and support healing. Whether you are managing an existing back issue or simply want a stronger and more resilient back, this class meets you where you are.

Foundations is a welcoming place to start if you are new to yoga, or coming back after time away.

These classes are a trial, which means your attendance decides what stays. Any class that is well attended becomes part of our ongoing schedule, so if one of these is what you have been waiting for, come and show us.

Every class you attend this month, in studio or online, enters you in a drawing for a free month of unlimited classes. Winner announced October 1.

Three weeks unlimited for $59 is open to everyone in September, new and current students alike. And if you are on our 8 or 12 class monthly membership, we are bumping you to unlimited for September at no additional charge.

We would love to see you. Full schedule and sign up at iyengaryogasource.com.

If you have ever wondered why we spend so long arranging bolsters and blankets before anyone lies down, this is why. In restorative yoga, the setup is part of the practice.

The props are not there to make a pose easier. They give your body something solid to rest on so it can stop holding itself up, and they bring your awareness into parts of yourself you would not otherwise feel. When the support is right, the physical effort falls away, and with it the mind settles and the breath softens.

✨We have weekly restorative classes on Wednesdays at 6:00 PM and Sundays at 5:30 PM.✨ Come as you are, no experience needed. See the full schedule and sign up at https://www.iyengaryogasource.com

What happens when there is nothing to accomplish?

Restorative practice invites us to slow down, become supported, and notice what happens when we stop trying to make something happen.

This week at IYS, we’re exploring the quieter side of practice - developing greater awareness of the body, breath, and mind.
