Freddie Pendleton, 1990s lightweight champion who was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and trainer Al Bonanni..

Though Pendleton fought out of Florida, he was much better than his 47-26-5 record indicated and embodied the aura of hard-working Philly fighters.

For starters, Pendleton had only six amateur fights and lost his pro debut. In his first 15 bouts, he record was an unimpressive 7-7-1 before he turned things around and defeated Tyrone Trice and Roger Mayweather.

"Fearless" Freddie had a good run in the late 1980s and early 90s that led to finally winning the IBF lightweight title in 1993. He only held the title until 1994, when he lost it on a decision to Rafael Ruelas, though not without doing some damage. "Four times I knocked Ruelas down and they gave him my belt," Pendleton later said. "I was robbed of my world title.”
