Most people in Louisiana have no idea what is sitting 20 minutes off Highway 90. Atchafalaya was designed by Robert von Hagge, the same architect behind Doral, LaCosta, and the TPC at The Woodlands. He moved more than half a million yards of native soil to build dramatic elevation, five lakes, and ten wetland areas across a 175 acre layout in the heart of the basin. Heads up, friends. The course and driving range will be closed all day tomorrow, Monday, June 8.

Our crew is treating and prepping the greens for the Paspalum interseeding coming the second week of July. This is the next step in the greens project we have been building toward all season, and the work has to happen with the course quiet so the treatment can do its job right.

We will be back open Tuesday, June 9. Thanks for your patience while we keep shaping a course that plays the way a Von Hagge design should.

You do not have to play 18 to eat here. The Atchafalaya Clubhouse is a 10,000 square foot cypress lodge with a 22 foot porch looking out over the 9th and 18th greens. Some of the best Cajun food in St. Mary Parish, a cold drink, and a front-row seat to golfers finishing their round. Open to the public, Tuesday through Sunday. Come for lunch, stay for the porch.

Hole 7 at Atchafalaya is called Blue Point, and it is one of the prettiest par 3s you will play in South Louisiana. Big trees stand behind it and a lake runs down the left. The green is shaped like a horse shoe, framed by small bunkers on the left, front, and right, with a lower level in the middle that makes putting tricky. It plays anywhere from 135 to 244 yards depending on your tees. Grab a mid iron, aim at the pin, and take your par. Around here, that is a good score. Book your tee time below.

Most public courses around here give you 18 holes and a parking lot.

Here's what you get at Atchafalaya at Idlewild:

A Von Hagge championship layout. 60+ bird species on the property. A clubhouse with real food and a deck overlooking 9 and 18. Bunkers being renovated. Greens being converted to Paspalum. Public access.

For what 18 holes costs around here, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better round.
