The putting greens are open and they will be a bit bumpy for a while.

That is the Commission's own wording, not a softening of it. Sand top dressing cannot be applied during the inter-seed phase of the conversion, so daily mowing and weekly rolling are doing the work in the meantime.

An overseed of Poa trivialis is the next step, and it should speed up coverage and consistency across the putting surfaces. It depends on seed availability and soil temperature, which is why it does not carry a date.

Every hole here is named for a cultural feature of the Atchafalaya Basin.

The front nine: Bayou Long, Cypress Island Pass, Willow Cove, Bayou Mistigris, Sandy Cove, Devil's Elbow, Blue Point, Duck Lake, Bayou Courtableau.

The back nine: Lake Mongoulois, Happy Town, C**n Trap, HaHa Bay, Wh***ey Bay, Crook Chene, Grand Avoyelle Cove, Lake Fausse Point, Six Mile Lake.

Eighteen names, and none of them were invented for a golf course.

You do not have to be a golfer to eat here.

The clubhouse is 10,000 square feet of cypress, roughly 130,000 board feet of it in the paneling alone. New Orleans City Business Magazine named the restaurant a top restaurant in the area. It is open to the public, and the tee sheet has nothing to do with whether you can get a table.

Tuesday through Saturday 11 to 9, Sunday 11 to 2, closed Monday. The bar is open daily 8 to 5.

You won't leave hungry, and everyone is welcome.

Meet Hole 12: C**n Trap. A dogleg right par 4 with a fairway wide enough to tempt you into taking on more than you should.

Long hitters can carry the fairway bunkers down the right and leave a short iron in. Everyone else plays down the middle and dodges the pot bunkers waiting there, which are small enough to forget about until you are in one.

The long weekend is a good excuse to play somewhere you have been meaning to get to.

Atchafalaya at Idlewild is a Von Hagge, Smelek and Baril routing through 175 acres of the Basin, five lakes and ten wetland areas, with five sets of tees so you can play it at a length that suits your game.

The next part of this happens in the cold.

Two things are working on these greens right now and both of them are seasonal. The goose grass that came up through the surfaces this summer cannot be sprayed without taking the young paspalum with it, so it stays where it is until the cold starts killing it off in November. It should be gone by mid December.

The other is coverage. An overseed of Poa trivialis goes on ahead of winter and improves the coverage and the condition of the putting surfaces from November through April.

Neither of those can be hurried, and that is the honest reason no date is being put on the overseed.

The porch was built for this.

Twenty-two feet wide and running the full length of the clubhouse, over the common green shared by 9 and 18. Everyone who finishes early gets to sit and watch the rest of the field come in. The stadium-type atmosphere makes it popular for tournaments.

Inside there is a private conference room seating up to 25 with a full AV setup, so a company outing can hold its meeting and then go play.

Upon recommendation of our consultant, the Atchafalaya Golf Commission has approved opening the putting greens Saturday, August 22.

As part of the inter-seed phase of the project to convert our putting surfaces to Pure Dynasty 'Stratis' Paspalum, we cannot top dress the greens with sand at this time. However, we will return to mowing the greens daily and rolling weekly. That said, the greens will be a bit bumpy for a while.

We intend to overseed all greens with a cool-season grass (Poa trivialis), subject to seed availability and soil temperature. Because cool-season grasses germinate quickly (4-5 days when the soil temperature is below 70 degrees Fahrenheit), compared with 30 days or more for Pure Dynasty 'Stratis' Paspalum, this should speed up coverage and consistency across the putting surfaces.

The clubhouse restaurant is open as usual.

Meet Hole 11: Happy Town. A par 3 where the tree decides your shot shape before you do.
A large one overhangs the right side of the fairway close to the tee, so a big draw is off the table. A fade is the shot. It plays 219 from the Gators, 175 from the Eagles, and 132 from the Otters.
Par is a solid score here. Take it and walk to 12.
