S*x IDENTITY

Being able to determine the S*x of REDEAR is a definite advantage in fishing for them

Redear are in the SUNFISH class..meaning they must HAVE SUNLIGHT ON THE NESTING BED for them to be successful

Often REDEAR can spawn in deeper water..so anglers cannot see the actual nest

So HOW I determine NESTING areas in deeper waters is that my clients catch TWO Males in a row in the same specific area

I distinguish the MALE by combination of things

1. Turning them over to view the belly..they have black fins and only one distinct HOLE
2. A SIDE view shows their BLACK TUXEDO COLORATION..the red strip around their ear is usually brighter and more pronounced
3.. Their TAIL can show wear from NEST/BED fanning
I distinguish the FEMALE by these characteristics..
1. Turning them over..they have bright YELLOW fins and two PROMINENT holes..one is the end of the digestive track...the other is the BIRTH Channel for eggs
2..A SIDE view shows a prominent YELLOW Coloration..their FLAP around their ear is much less red and and easily be white..pale orange/pink or even absent

SOMETIMES I catch females with Bloodie patches on their side where the males have hit them with their noses in an attempt to get the female to eject their eggs

We fish for Stripers from November 1st to early March, then Redear until we end our season mid-May. When fishing for Redear, we also catch Large and Smallmouth Bass.)
