"Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief..." Isaiah 53:10 (ESV)
"And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross." Philippians 2:8 (ESV)
There are some verses in the Bible that make you stop and read them twice because they feel almost too heavy to take in all at once. Isaiah 53:10 is one of them. We read that it was the will of the Lord to crush Him and our first reaction is often, "Wait...what?" Because that sounds backwards. We expect God to rescue the hero, not send Him into suffering. We expect the King to ride in on a war horse, not walk toward a cross. We expect victory to look like victory. Instead, Isaiah describes something that looked like complete defeat.
Then Philippians 2:8 pulls back the curtain and shows us something equally astonishing. Jesus was obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. In other words, the Father did not force a reluctant Son into a plan He hated. Jesus willingly stepped into it. He knew exactly where the road led. Every sermon, every miracle, every conversation with the disciples, every step toward Jerusalem brought Him closer to the moment He would be arrested, mocked, beaten, and crucified. Yet He kept walking.
That is the part that gets me.
Jesus knew things I desperately wish I could know. I would love a detailed schedule of every difficult thing that is going to happen in the next ten years so I can mentally prepare and complain about it in advance. If I knew I was going to have a rough Tuesday, I would probably start being dramatic about it on Monday. If I knew a calf was going to escape three days from now, I would already be suspicious of every innocent face staring at me from a stall. Yet Jesus knew every detail of the suffering ahead of Him, not just days ahead, but years ahead, and He still came.
He knew Judas would betray Him. He knew Peter would deny Him. He knew the crowd that shouted "Hosanna!" would soon be shouting "Crucify Him!" He knew the nails were coming. He knew the crown of thorns was coming. He knew there would be a moment when He would bear the weight of sin that belonged to every one of us. Every lie. Every act of selfishness. Every cruel word. Every secret thought. Every sin from every generation laid on His shoulders.
And He came anyway.
That is what makes the cross different from every other story of sacrifice. Jesus was not trapped. He was not cornered. He was not caught in circumstances beyond His control. At any point He could have walked away. At any point He could have called down angels. At any point He could have reminded humanity exactly who had invented oxygen and was generously continuing to provide it. Instead, He humbled Himself.
The Creator became a servant.
The King accepted a crown made of thorns.
The Judge took the punishment.
The Shepherd became the Lamb.
And He did it because love is not just something God feels. Love is something God does.
What amazes me is that Isaiah 53:10 does not stop with suffering. It goes on to talk about Him seeing His offspring and His days being prolonged. Hundreds of years before the resurrection, Isaiah is already hinting that death will not get the final word. The cross was never the end of the story. It was the price of redemption. It was the doorway to resurrection. It was the moment where justice and mercy met in a way no human mind could have designed.
Sometimes we look at the hard chapters in our own lives and assume God has abandoned the story. We see the cross but not the empty tomb. We see Friday but not Sunday. We see the crushing but not the redemption that God is building through it. Yet the greatest act of salvation in history looked like a disaster while it was happening. The disciples thought everything was lost. Heaven knew the victory had already been won.
That is why these verses hit so hard. They remind us that our salvation was not cheap. It cost something. Actually, it cost everything. The Father was willing to send His Son. The Son was willing to obey. The cross was not an accident. It was not Plan B. It was love carried all the way to the finish line.
And maybe that is what leaves me speechless. Jesus saw the whole road ahead. He saw the betrayal, the suffering, the humiliation, the nails, the cross, and the grave. He also saw every person who would one day be redeemed because of it. He saw every prodigal who would come home. Every sinner who would be forgiven. Every tear that would one day be wiped away. Every empty grave that would exist because His tomb did not stay full.
He saw all of that.
And knowing the cost, He took the next step anyway.
