Most people wait for a bright, sunny day to get out on the water, but honestly, some of my favorite mornings are the overcast ones.

The cooler temperatures make for a really comfortable paddle, and there's something about the soft light and quiet water that just feels peaceful. It's the perfect excuse to slow down, unplug for a while, and soak in everything the lagoon has to offer.

Don't let a cloudy forecast keep you at home. Around here, gray skies can make for a pretty amazing morning on the water.

If you're ready to experience the quieter side of Mosquito Lagoon, we'd love to get you out there.

๐ŸŒฟ Happy World Mangrove Day! ๐ŸŒฟ

Today we're celebrating one of the Indian River Lagoon's greatest unsung heroes... mangrove trees! Their tangled roots provide a nursery for young fish, crabs, and shrimp, help filter our water, protect our shoreline from erosion, and create habitat for countless birds and other wildlife.

I put together this short video to share just a small glimpse of the incredible mangrove community I'm lucky enough to see while working on the lagoon every day. ๐Ÿ’š

A healthy lagoon starts with healthy mangroves. Here's to celebrating and protecting these incredible trees today and every day!

Every now n' then we sneak in a fishing trip before we open our business for the day.

During our own fishing adventure this dolphin decided it was his turn to fish! ๐Ÿฌ๐ŸŽฃ

Dolphins often hunt around anglers because our activity can stir up fish, making for an easy meal. We were happy to wait and let this local pro do his thing.

Moments like this are exactly why we love Mosquito Lagoon... you never know what you're going to see next!

It's also one of the reasons renting from us is different. We don't just hand you a kayak and point you toward the water. We're out here ourselves, exploring, fishing, and learning this lagoon firsthand, so we can help you find the best places to paddle, fish, and experience the incredible wildlife that makes this area so special.

Ready to experience the wild side of Mosquito Lagoon? We'd love to get you out on the water!

Today's surprise along our launch shoreline was this amazing mantis shrimp! These colorful little predators are famous for having one of the fastest and most powerful strikes in the animal kingdom.

Did you know that their eyesight is just as fascinating? Mantis shrimp have one of the most complex visual systems ever discovered, with the ability to detect ultraviolet and polarized light. Scientists are still unraveling exactly how they process all of that information, making these cool creature's one of the lagoon's most intriguing mysteries.

It's another reminder that the Indian River Lagoon is bursting with incredible wildlife and every paddle has the chance to reveal something unexpected!

Have you ever spotted a mantis shrimp in the wild? We'd love to hear about it! ๐Ÿ‘‡

This chubby mermaid cruised in, found the freshest salad bar in town, and got right to work.

Nature is pretty awesome like that. ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿ“ข Listen up, all my Florida peeps!

Here's a topic that needs to be discussed if we want to keep and protect our natural resources here in the beautiful State of Florida. I don't know if you've seen this guy around Facebook, but he's a huge advocate for "Wild Florida" and slowing the pace of development, which is incredibly important for our state.

If development continues at the rate it's going, there may come a day when there isn't much "Wild Florida" left. The natural green spaces, parks, preserves, conservation areas, and the beautiful outdoors that make Florida so special could become a thing of the past. And once those places are gone, much of the wildlife that depends on them will disappear too.

Then what?

We'll be living in, or visiting, a state that's covered in concrete, asphalt, and manufactured green spaces, with very little wildlife left to enjoy. Doesn't sound very inviting, does it?

Election season is just around the corner, and we'll soon be choosing a new Governor. Now is the time to start paying attention to the candidates. Learn where they stand. Do your research. Ask the tough questions.

We have an opportunity to help shape Florida's future, but only if we elect leaders who are willing to stand up and protect the natural beauty that makes this state so unique. Overdevelopment isn't something we can undo once it's happened.

Please vote.

๐Ÿ’” An important update on the dead/injured manatee sighting...

Not long after we reported the deceased manatee that drifted by earlier the other day, another manatee floated past. This one was alive, but it appeared to be injured and in distress.

We immediately contacted the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to let them know about the second manatee.

If you're out on the water and see a manatee that appears to be injured, sick, entangled, orphaned, or deceased, please don't assume someone else has already reported it. A quick phone call can make all the difference and may help save that animal's life.

๐Ÿ“ž Report manatees to the FWC Wildlife Alert Hotline: 1-888-404-FWCC (1-888-404-3922)

Our waterways are home to incredible wildlife, and we all play a part in looking out for them. Thank you to everyone who keeps their eyes open and helps protect these gentle giants. ๐Ÿ’™
