π¨ Hey! Did You Feel That?! ππ¬π¦
A 6.1 magnitude earthquake was reported hundreds of miles south of us (65 miles WNW of Mantua, Cuba) and was felt in parts of Florida, including right here along the coast!
While the shaking we experience is usually mild, underwater vibrations can travel great distances through water. Marine animals like dolphins, manatees, fish, and even sea turtles are incredibly sensitive to changes in their environment and may notice unusual vibrations long before we do.
Scientists are still studying exactly how marine wildlife responds to earthquakes, but some animals have been observed changing their behavior, swimming patterns, or activity levels after seismic events. π
Did our local dolphins and manatees notice today's rumble? We can't ask them, but if they suddenly looked around wondering, "What was that?!" we wouldn't blame them! π
Nature is full of surprises, and today was a reminder that even events happening hundreds of miles away can send ripples through our connected world.
Did you feel the shaking where you were? Let us know in the comments! π
Note: Earthquakes this far away are not typically harmful to our local wildlife, though they may briefly notice the vibrations passing through the water. ππ
