The Harbor classroom is back in session!

For a ninth year in a row, Newport fourth graders will have some morning classes a bit differently. They leave the traditional classroom behind for the Pell School Science & Sailing Program. This morning program integrates learning to sail with STEM topics created by Pell teachers.

What a day in the program is like: students set sail aboard the fleet of J/7’s to learn boat handling and navigation, gaining confidence before heading shoreside to learn about weather, water, marine life, sustainability, buoyancy, and more!

The combination of hands on learning and STEM topics creates lessons for students to apply in real world scenarios.

The Pell Program runs Fall & Spring, giving students the ultimate opportunity to be in nature!

Congrats the EOS sailors who competed aboard the IC37 ‘Rhody Red’! Tricky northerly conditions meant a counter clockwise trip around the island. A beautiful long downwind sail down the west passage before the dying breeze forced race committee to shorten the course at Beavertail Lighthouse.

Join us Saturday, September 26, for the 25th Anniversary Sail for Pride, a race around Conanicut Island to commemorate 9/11, raise funds for select nonprofit organizations, and fly the ensign in a show of patriotism.

🤝Proceeds from entry fees and an after-race fundraising social at Safe Harbor Newport Shipyard will be split between the three charities.

INTRODUCING: Drinks, Dessert & Dancing Ticket🪩🍹🕺

There’s a new way to join us harbor side during Endless Summer for a night of change making. Throw on your dancing shoes and fill the dance floor with a new ticket that gives you entry to Endless Summer fundraiser at 8:30p. Think specialty cocktails, an array of desserts, and lively dancing under the tent!

All proceeds from ticket sales support Sail Newport’s mission to bring sailing and ocean education to all ages through community sailing and outreach programs.

🇺🇸 2026 Sail For Pride 🇺🇸

Registration is open for sailboats 22’ and larger. There are several PHRF spinnaker classes, a PHRF nonspinnaker class, multihull and one-design classes. All sailboats are encouraged to enter. We will assign a rating if you don’t have one so you can participate in this memorable race around Jamestown.

In 2001, the sailing community gathered outside Newport Harbor for the first Sail for Pride in the wake of the tragic events of 9/11. Twenty five years later, the tradition continues with this year’s 25th Anniversary Sail for Pride on Saturday, September 26. The first start will be at 10:55.

🏆 CHAMPIONS CROWNED 🏆

Cool, calm, and collected - Justin Callahan & Trevor Davis clinch the 2026 Snipe North American Championship after a commanding and challenging day of racing.

Ernesto Rodriguez & Taylor Scheuermann sailed into second place and claimed the Masters division title. Shawn Harvey & Cam Giblin put together a fantastic day of sailing and took home third place. Gus Macaulay & Cody Lamoreux claim the Juniors division title.

With a shifty southwesterly in Potters Cove, teams had to keep their heads out of the boats, make smart strategic calls, and stay ahead of the next shift. All while keeping an eye on their competition. There was no room for mistakes at the top of the fleet. The top two teams traded places all day before it all came down to the final race.

Strategic sailing from Callahan meant engaging with the defending champions before the start, loose covering up the beats, and focused boat work. In an incredibly competitive Snipe fleet, Callahan continues to shine.

Congratulations to all 56 teams on a successful North American Championship!

Day 1 in the books✅

The fleet towed to Potters Cove for a light, but building, southerly for the preliminary day of the 2026 Snipe North American Championship. The 56 boat Snipe fleet stretched from Newport shore to Jamestown shore as they sailed their .85nm course.

Consistency was the name of the game over two races. Impending rain storms, a shifting breeze, and current forced teams to keep their heads out of the boat.

The race for the Birney Mills Trophy is underway 💪🏼

From World Champions to Olympic medalists to defending 2025 North American Champions, the 2026 Snipe North American Championship is guaranteed competitive racing backed by Newport’s signature hospitality and charm.

👀 Who to keep an eye on

Justin Callahan - 2026 Snipe US National Champion, past Snipe Junior World Championship, back to back College Sailor of the Year. For someone this young, the resume is impressively long. Sailing with longtime crew Trevor Davis.

Ernesto Rodriguez - Defending North American Champion, 2nd at this year’s Nationals, and has been on the podium of every major Snipe event. He has multiple Snipe North American Champion titles to his name. Sailing with Taylor Scheuermann.

Stefano Peschiera - 2024 Paris Olympic bronze medalist in the ILCA7, 2x olympic appearances. New to the snipe class but making waves at every regatta. Backed up by a wealth of Snipe knowledge through crew Kathleen Tocke.

Augie Diaz - 4x Snipe World Champion, 2x Olympic medalist, Rolex Yachtsman of the Year, SCIRA Hall of Fame & National Sailing Hall of Fame inductee… Frankly, his resume is too long to keep going but you get the idea. Sailing with Ciara Rodriguez Horan.

Carol Cronin - Snipe Women’s World Champion, 2004 Olympian in the Yingling class, and Snipe crew turned skipper. Not many know the boat as well as she does. Sailing with friend and 20yr teammate Kim Couranz.

Arthur Blodgett - Never to be underestimated. 2026 Colonial Cup winner, third at 2026 Nationals. Sailing coach extraordinaire and teaming up with powerhouse crew Grace Howie.

Bradley Adams - Sailing with a hometown advantage, fresh off a win at the Newport Regatta and consistently in the top ten. This could be his championship regatta. Sailing with Raam Fox.
