We’re excited that Axis will be the home for the monthly meetings of both the 504 Democratic Club and 504 Northstar moving forward, creating ongoing opportunities for our community to connect, learn, organize, and participate in civic life.
A Little History
The 504 Democratic Club was organized in 1983, growing out of NYC’s disability rights movement. Its name honors Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, a landmark civil rights protection prohibiting disability discrimination in federally funded programs.
Around the turn of the millennium, 504 North Star emerged as an uptown affiliate, rooted in Harlem and focused particularly on disabled people of color and communities in Northern Manhattan, the Bronx and Westchester.
While they have different approaches, both are nonpartisan spaces for civic engagement.
Why come? To better understand how government and policy affect your life, meet disability advocates and community leaders, learn how to organize around issues you care about, and strengthen the collective voice of disabled New Yorkers.
You don’t need to be a political expert or already consider yourself an advocate. Come eat, connect, listen, learn, ask questions—and discover how you can have a greater voice in the decisions that affect your life.
