The controversy was intensified by Flair’s possession of the physical Big Gold Belt. Because of a financial dispute surrounding the championship deposit, Flair retained the belt after leaving WCW and soon appeared on WWF television carrying it while being introduced as “The Real World’s Champion.”

The situation became one of the most extraordinary examples of promotional rivalry in wrestling history. The reigning face of WCW had crossed directly into its expanding national competitor while carrying a championship belt visually associated with the company he had just left.

The NWA’s decision on September 8 finally ended Flair’s official recognition as its World Heavyweight Champion, but the image of Ric Flair arriving in the WWF with the Big Gold Belt became one of the defining symbols of professional wrestling’s increasingly aggressive promotional war in the early 1990s.

Kendrick’s moment was short-lived, with Triple H ultimately finishing the match as WWE Champion, meaning Kendrick’s interim reign was never recognized as an official championship reign.

Even so, the sequence became one of the most memorable moments of Kendrick’s WWE career. For a brief period on one of the company’s major pay-per-views, The Brian Kendrick could legitimately claim that he was the interim WWE Champion.
