️⃣ Have you tried telling your overwhelmed child how to cope in the heat of a meltdown??? 🙋🏼♀️
️⃣ Perhaps you’ve said:
“Take a deep breath.”
“You need to calm down. “
️⃣ Whilst your first instinct is to nurture & talk, it actually escalates the meltdown & doesn’t help your autistic or ADHD child cope.
️⃣ Limit the amount & type of input that you’re asking them to process during a meltdown.
️⃣ Processing language is difficult during a meltdown. But visual processing is a strength.
️⃣ So STOP TALKING during a meltdown!
️⃣ Try SHOWING & MODELING the coping skills that you want your child to engage in during the meltdown.
️⃣ This is so much more powerful than telling them how to calm down. Try it and let me know how it goes!
