"I love dance, but I don't love to dance."

That one sentence stopped people mid-scroll when I first said it out loud — and it changed everything about how I see my work.

In my conversation on the Living the Red Life podcast, I talk about the moment I realized that my calling was never about performing. It was about pouring into others who do. About building the kind of discipline, tradition, and character that carries students far beyond the stage.

Robin sits down with fellow studio owner and friend Marty Roberts, who gave up an engineering acceptance at the University of Washington for a community college business degree and a life running the basement studio she once trained in as a kid.

Forty plus years later, she's still building on that legacy.

The conversation covers what that early pivot cost her and what it gave back, how Marty stepped back from day to day ownership without losing what made the studio hers, and how she stays visible to families even when she isn't in the building five days a week.

They dig into the teen teaching assistant debate, the pushback from dance parents, and why a seventeen year old trained in your culture can outperform a polished resume. Marty also talks about raising creative kids inside the business, her daughter now directing the competition team, her son building guitars with his dad, and why only one of her children wanted to come back to the studio.

AcroDance pairs classical dance technique with the strength and precision of acrobatics: balancing, limbering, tumbling, and partnering work most dancers only dream about. It's one of the most physically demanding classes we offer, and one of the most fun to watch come together.

Who it's for: Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced dancers. Must also be enrolled in a ballet class.

When it meets: Thursdays, 5:00-6:00 in appropriate groupings

We're gearing up for our 35th season, and before we dive in, we want to take a moment to celebrate our Dream Team. At EMC, we're grateful for the administrators and directors who pour into our students every week, and this team deserves some real praise.

As summer came to a close, we hosted a Director's Dinner as a part of our annual Dream Team Training Retreat and took time to recognize each of our 10 directors individually with dinner, words of acknowledgment, gifts, and a little peer praise for good measure.

For a long time, I thought something was wrong with me.

I had built a career around dance. I ran a studio. I lived and breathed this world. And yet — I didn't feel the pull to be on the stage myself.

It took me years to realize: that's not a flaw. That's a calling.

My gift is in growing the people who do perform. In helping students understand that success isn't just about the moments under the lights — it's about falling in love with the everyday work. The correction you take on a Tuesday. The class you show up to even when you're tired. The small habits that quietly shape who you become.

A new school year is here. New routines, new goals, new possibilities.

For some families, this is also the year their child stops wondering "what if" — and actually finds out.

Robin sits down with Santina to break down the Dream Team Training Retreat, EMC's annual four-day team event held at a rented Airbnb outside the studio.

She walks through how each day serves a different purpose: Thursday's Holiday Celebration planning meeting, led start to finish by artistic director Elisabeth Simmons.

Friday's Director's Dinner, where Robin hands out awards and rethinks what a gift-giver she wants to be.

Saturday's full training day, including a live pivot after realizing the group needed more interaction; and Sunday's Rising Leaders Brunch, restructured into breakout groups so student teachers could share their own classroom strategies.

Robin also talks about Alli's path at EMC, hired for personality over skill set and given room to grow without micromanagement, and why she collects debrief feedback every year to change the format for next time.

One thing we want families to know about Next Stage: we are not in the business of vague promises.

When a student completes Jump Start, they walk out with something tangible:
✅ Industry-formatted resume (PDF) — ready to send
✅ Completed profiles on Actors Access & Casting Networks
✅ A polished slate video
✅ Two edited headshots — commercial look + legit look
✅ A self-tape equipment checklist and the know-how to use it

The goal: submission-ready within 7 days of the workshop.

That's what Ella walked away with. And that's what we want for every student who comes through this program.
