The MHSAA announced it was removing Grand Rapids Catholic Central from the Division 5 football playoffs. According to the MHSAA, Grand Rapids Catholic Central used an ineligible player for the first seven games of the season, meaning the Cougars forfeit those games.

In an online statement, Catholic Central said the student in question enrolled in the school in January of 2026. His previous school filed a complaint saying it was an athletically motivated transfer, which the MHSAA found unsupported in May, according to the statement.

The student moved over the summer and the MHSAA issued a letter to confirm his eligibility, according to CC.

When Catholic Central found out it was being investigated during the season, they sat the player out the final two games of the regular season. The MHSAA ruled the player to be ineligible, just a day before the start of the playoffs.

Opinion: The MHSAA messed up. To confirm a player's eligibility, let him play the entire season, and then change their mind? They screwed an entire team, its families, and their seniors out of the final moments of their high school careers.
