A message from Harper Leigh of the Nimitz Group regarding upcoming changes to VA healthcare:

The new Federal EHR will facilitate service members’ transition from military to civilian life, improve clinical outcomes by providing
healthcare providers with a complete view of a patient’s medical
history, and improve collaboration between community partners at all levels. This means more streamlined communication with providers, easier prescription management, and better experiences for Veterans when they seek care in their communities. Once transition to the new EHR is complete at all VAs in the USA, a veteran's health record will be accessible at any of them. One record wherever they get care.

VA is implementing a new electonic health record (EHR) called the Federal EHR at all VA facilities. This system contains your complete health record and tracks all of your medical care. The Federal EHR will improve VA's health care delivery and positively impact the care you receive. Here are just a few ways the new system benefits you. Easier transition from military to VA care. You no longer have to manager the transfer of your own records when you separate from the military because they are already in the system. More productive appointments. You can spend more time talking with providers about your health concerns and available treatments and less time repeating your health history. Less time undergoing repeat tests, imaging, and exams. With information like test resilts and records from military and community care providers already in the system, you will spend less time repeating past procedures and exams. Improved prevention and treatment options. As the Federal EHR is deployed to more facilities, VA can analyze Veterans and service member data more easily, giving deeper insights into Veteran health issues and informing innovative new treatments. Consistent experience across VA facilities. If you are referred to another VA, it will operate the same and can quickly access all your records, referrals, and orders. And, you will use one patient portal no matter which VA you visit. The same high-quality care at every VA. A single Federal EHR will better support nationally standardized health care delivery, allowing innovations and best practices to be identified, spread, and adopted more effectively. Real world scenario. Before the Federal EHR, VA providers were unable to access diagnostics-quality (high-quality) X-ray images from the Department of Defense (DoD). After implementation of the Federal EHR, VA providers can access diagnostic-quality X-rays from DoD and can make accurate comparisons with current images. They can see how bones are healing and make more informed decisions regarding your health care. Image description ends.

Check out the awesome video Laughing Crow Veteran Adventures made about the UP Vets Served program! The adaptive bike program was fun this summer - excited to get out again next year!

Note: Tim mentions that dogs are welcome at UP Vets Served events - to be clear, the UP Vets Served program welcomes dogs that are trained service animals.

Veteran's Summer Biking Club

Join UP Vets Served for an inclusive biking series for veterans and their immediate family members! These relaxed rides along the Marquette bike path include shared meals from Marquette restaurants and mindfulness sessions that incorporate gentle movement, breathing exercises, and guided meditation to help participants deepen their connection to their breath, their body, and the present moment. Veterans who prefer not to ride are welcome to join for the meal and mindfulness portion.

All rides go from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm (give or take) and will begin and end at:
Superior Mini Storage
2120 Sugarloaf Avenue
Marquette, MI

Dates and correlating park destinations are following. Join for one, some, or all!

August 7 - Presque Isle Park
August 28 - Shiras Park
September 18 - Ellwood Mattson Lower Harbor Park

Registration is required by the Wednesday of the bike rides you would like to join by calling 906-936-0908. This ensures that you will have a meal and an accessible bike if necessary.

SAIL has a fleet of 21 adaptive, accessible on site for free use at these and other events! If you're interested in learning more about these bikes, call Tim at 906-936-0908 to find one to use that’s right for you!

In case of poor weather, meal and mindfulness events will move to the SAIL Office, located at 1025 West Washington Street, Suite C, in Marquette.

UPVETS Served is a free, accessible recreation program for U.P. veterans and their immediate families. All programming and meals are paid for through generous donations to SAIL’s 1-in-4 campaign.

Our friends with the Oscar G. Johnson VA Caregiver Support Program are holding the VA Caregiver Resource Fair, an opportunity to learn about the wealth of resources available to Caregivers and families of veterans from the VA and other community agencies.

There will be resources, wellness activities, and refreshments!
