Carter Maneth fell in love with golf as a kid, playing rounds at Hope CC in southwest Arkansas with his dad, Jeff. And for years, Carter would circle the Arkansas State Amateur and U.S. Amateur on his calendar.

Less than two years ago, Jeff and Carter's paternal grandparents, Marion and MJ, died in a plane crash on their way to watch Carter compete in a college event.

Carter Maneth played on, capping his college career last spring by qualifying as an individual for an NCAA regional. He then won the Arkansas State Amateur to also earn a berth in his first U.S. Amateur – and at Merion no less.

Maneth, who is set to turn pro after this week, plays golf these days with his dad's bag tag hanging from his own bag and special ball marker to honor his loved ones.

He tees off Merion's first tee this morning.

“If I could pick one U.S. Am to play in for my career, I think I picked a good one.”
