I recently read results regarding a study performed on street fights from data gathered from security cameras and official reports (mostly camera study). Here are the results for reflection. TRAIN ACCORDINGLY
1. 73% end in under 10 seconds
2. The average street fight involves 4.3 people (friends entered the fight)
3. Weapons are brandished in 31% of fights - usually within the first 15 seconds
4. The person who threw the first punch or landed the first significant strike wins 68% of the time
5. Trained boxers won 84% of their street fights, regardless of the style of fighter they were fighting
6. Brazilian ju jutsu practitioners lost 68% of their street fights (going to the ground invited “friends” to join the fight)
7. Staying upright and controlling distance showed to be the best strategy in practically all of the fights
8. The average street fight lasts 8.7 seconds
9. The person who got hit first generally went into a survival, defensive, cover-up mode, which proved to be the losing strategy, yielding aggression to is opponent …. aggressiveness overwhelmingly defeated passive or defensive strategies
10. In 62% of the fights the first significant strike determined the winner within 5 seconds
11. Fighters who attempted kicks above the knee lost 71% of the time
12. Low kicks succeeded 54% of the time
13. Fighters who voluntarily took the fight to the ground lost 78% of the time
14. When the fight went to the ground weapons came into play 31% of the time, others joined the fight in 40% of those fights
15. Weapons appeared in 31% of street fights, and of those - the weapon appeared in the first 15 seconds 67% of the time
16. Of the total weapons brandished in a street fight, 47% were knives, 38% were bottles or broken glass, with the remaining being “on-the-spot” improvised weapons
17. Of those attempting to disarm an armed attacker, 83% of the defendents were injured
18. Against 3 or more attackers, the defender lost 91% of the time
19. Nearly all of those surviving multiple attackers escaped by running away, not by fighting them off
20. Verbal de-escalation worked 41% of the time
21. Aggressive response escalated to violence 78% of the time
22. Submissive response invited continued aggression 63% of the time
23. “I don’t want any trouble” with confident body language, maintaining eye contact and slowly creating distance worked 41% of the time
24. The fighter utilizing the environment (walls, doorways, the floor, escape routes, etc.) won 81% of the time
25. Situational awareness and recognition of possible trouble proved a valuable defense against trouble
26. Victims were mostly in a state of distraction (on the phone, head down, etc.) when attacked
27. Of the 500 street fights researched and studied, it is estimated that 90% of them could have been avoided through simple situational awareness
